PS3 on a projector?

1356 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Guttboy
Hi all,

Has anyone ever tried connecting a PS3 to a projector? The projector has VGA, s-video inputs along with a 3.5 headphone socket.

So i'm wondering what is the best way to make this work?

Obviously the PS3 has HDMI, and component (scart cables), so what is the best (cheapest) option to get pictures and sound from this set up?

Pro's and con's anyone?

cheers Oz

I got a friend with a little home theater set up. Just a projector on the cieling and a pull down screen, though for a long time he just shot the picture on his wall. He does every thing with it. TV, Movies, XBox 360...

He doesn't have a PS3 but I am sure it would work fine. The picture is really crisp, though I know he paid about $2000 for his projector too. I've often thought about making a similar setup...but I don't watch enough TV or movies to bring the idea to my wife. Heck, I haven't bought an HD TV yet.

Heh...I am at work and he just walked by. He says decent projectors start about $700...$1200 for a good one that can look crisp and sharp at large projection sizes.
This is all I could find on the egg.

I'm not sure if there is just a cable that will do it, of if you need a converter like that one.
Interesting box redmustang, i'll keep looking, but as this is likely to be a one off i didn't really want to spend so much. (my mate has a projector, and i'm going to visit for the weekend). I think the projector is an analogue device (vga, s-video) so i might have to go from the PS3 scart/component out rather than the HDMI..

with the right connections anything can work on a projector. but just be aware that the results are nothing compared to a decent sized 1080P HDTV. Unless the projector is right up in the top end of the market. Where you're paying about 5x more than the HDTV equivalent.
Component and VGA are teh same thing, just get a component to vga converter
The majority of new(er) Projectors will take almost any signal (VGA/RGB/Composite and S-Video) 1080/720/480 PAL/NTSC/SECAM

IT MAKES NO SENSE TO MAKE A PROJECTOR THAT DONT TAKE EVERYTHING!

DLP Projectors have a sharper image and BLACK is BLACK! downside is a `rainbow effect` which is a slight flicker of colour on small areas of high contrast (say a white dot moving across a black screen) or if you move your head from side to side you may also notice it (Ya get used to it!)

someone mentioned that a HDTV is better, maybe for long term usage, as in a TV that spends most of the day ON.

I think I would rather have my 80" display that cost £350ish to a similarly priced HDTV!

each to thier own though! good luck with whatever ya get!

Was just wondering... If there's no hdcp on the projector, won't the resolution on the PS3 be limited to 580p regardless of component/scart connections?

your projector cost £350? I don't think an image from a low-end projector at 80" is going to display as good an image as a 42" 1080P HDTV. Long or short term.

It totally depends on your setup....

I have my PS3 connected via HDMI to an Epson 6500UB projecting on a 110" Vutec Silver Star screen. I have a hard time "downgrading" to the 42" in another room.

A forum you might want to take a look at is the AVS forum.....here is a link....

There are many sections....one of which deals with PS3's....give it a looksie!
