Hi all. I have a PS4 on order. Standard 500G hard drive. I was thinking of upgrading it to a 2T hard drive, but chickened out for now.

If I start running out of room, can I transfer games to an external hard drive to free up room? Can they be transferred back to play? Can they be played from the external drive?

Amazon has a lot of Digital game downloads. Will these games work the same way as far as moving them on/off the hard drive?

If I do get a bigger hard drive, will this one work?...

Thanks for any help.

No as far as I am aware. You can backup the save files though, but if you got Playstation Plus you won't need it.
You can also backup images, videos etc.
Can they be transferred back to play? Answered above.
Can they be played from the external drive? Even if they could I suspect it would be horrible.

I believe with Amazon you get a code, you activate that code on your Playstation account and gets added to your library which you can then download or not.

Generally speaking, any drive works as long as you make it fit.
You can even use a 3.5 inch drive, but youll have to get external power supply for them.

If you prefer not to uninstall games when you're out of space, then a 2TB drive will do you great. Imagine most AAA games being about 40Gigs +/- 10Gigs. That 500 GB will fill up fast. Also, digital or not, even physical disc games install on the hard drive. I say, upgrade the drive right when you get it. I think ( don't quote me on it) you can transfer your hard drive files to another drive in the sense of a replacement, but you can't move the games to another hdd as game storage. But why play the gamble and odds when you can do it right the first time?

AFAIK, Sony does not allow external HDDs like Microsoft to act as a storage unit.

If that 2 TB drive is no larger than 9.5mm, it'll fit just fine (didn't check the link).

you run out of space on the 500gb pretty quick, and unfortunately they don't support external hard drives (boooo!)

id go for the 2TB if i was upgrading.

On a side note - frequently external hard drives are cheaper than internal hard drives (strange but true). So one option is to buy a 2tb external, then swap the external case with 500gb ps4 drive.
