This PSU is actually pretty overkill. So, it's just instability.

However, I'm worried that it may not be able to handle this system with two GTX 580s in it due to its age. So you can either get a brand new high quality 750W, or an 850W for even more headroom.

so what is the purpose for the ax1200...because if the corsair 850 will handle and OC cpu and two 580s...what is the reasoning? are people having problems with not enough power with 850w and which 850w should i look into..and money isnt really an issue..i will shell out more dough for a 1000w+ i just want something so i have the headroom and stability...

A quality 850 will be more than enough. Most quality PSU's will have a 80-90% efficiency under load and with that you will be fine with a 850w. The hx850/ax850 Corsairs are good choices. But that's the only brand that I personally have experience with. You see 1000w/1200w for tri-sli and so forth. I would get the 850 over the 750 just because of aging capacitors over time. Even my hx750 has been tested by many review sites to do 900w under load at 85%-90%.

I don't think that you BSOD'ing has to do with your power supply. Because that 750w should more than handle your 2600k and 580. You should look into your ram or oc settings to make sure why you're BSOD'ing

The purpose of a PSU like the AX1200 is for systems with more than just two GTX 580s.

I don't understand why you're asking.

Anyway, a quality 850W power supply will be more than enough for this system with two GTX 580s in it.

Just have that go big or go home mentality i guess...i would feel more comfortable having that extra headroom..incase ill ever need it.. someday. but i hear people complaining about the 1200 being too noisy and what not...different manufacturers so who knows...and why is this psu priced at 279.99 on new egg and a pc power and cooling 1200w is 499.99...is this corsair psu cheaper for a reason...less quality? who knows...but if and good 850 is out there with my name on it...which ones do you suggest.

The PC Power & Cooling Turbocool 1200W is $500, but costs half what it costs to make an AX1200. There are a lot of idjuts who don't know that PC P&C is a rotting corpse being used by OCZ to bolster revenue for their SSD venture. The Turbocool 1200W is a design from 2005, and by modern standards is pretty mediocre for a 1200W.

While the PCP&C unit is an old design, I still think it would work just fine with two GTX 580's as long as you don't run LinX/Furmark simultaneously 24/7. As for cap aging, that really isn't an issue. With most high quality Japanese caps nowadays, you would hardly lose anything (<5% maybe?) unless the PSU is like 5-7+ years old.
