PSU Selection Help

1343 Views 20 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Kaninja
I'm planning (not certain) on a new build next year.

I'm a n00b and I'm just choosing things that look good. I've had help along the way and now I need help on the PSU.

I haven't got a clue what the rails do so I need advice on what to choose.

I want it to be fairly future-proof so 850W up is good.

I was going for the Antec TPQ 850W: http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=NTg=

If there's anything I missed, just ask and I'll add it in this post.

What are you going to do with this rig? And are you going to have 1 video card or more?
Quad or dual core? We need to know more on this.

And i'll be using it for gaming and surfing.

Thanks!

For Project Raiden I would recommend the Corsair HX650. It will be way more than enough for that configuration.

That would even allow you to add another 5850 in the future for x-fire.

a nice corsair 650W PSU or a modxstream 700W should be more than enough for a setup like that. the only thing you need a whole crap-ton of watts for are multi-graphics card setups
That's a solid power supply, but it's not really needed.

A 750W would be fine for any dual GPU setup. You could TriFire 5850s on the 850W though.
Thanks guys for the replies.

I was looking at Corsair too because I saw a lot of users here used them but I wasn't sure to get TX or HX, ones modular but I can't remember which one. I don't need a modular PSU do I?

And about the Dual/Tri GPU setup, I'm probably never going to get enough money for that (with me spending every dollar on games) so I agree that 750W will be enough!

Thanks again!

There are a couple of reasons why I prefer modular (the HX series is modular):
  1. Easier cable management. If I didn't have a modular PSU, then the interior of my rig wouldn't look so clean.
  2. Better airflow. Due to the better cable management, there are less cables just hanging out in the open which means that the airflow is freer and better. Due to this, I can get the best cooling possible from my rig.
  3. Slightly easier setup. Without all of those unnecessary cables, all I have to deal with are the cables that I need. It's so nice.
But otherwise, it's just like a toy, and toys are not necessary.

I looked on newegg and the HX modular PSU is more expensive.

Is it worth the price?

And should I go Antec or Corsair for the PSU? Not for the wattage, just the reliability/performance side of things.

If those things I listed above are really important to you, then it's worth it. But if you couldn't care less, then it's probably not worth it.

As for which PSU to go with: I'm not sure. There are a couple of people on here who can accurately compare the two and explain why one is truly better than the other. I mean, I think there's a chance that the 850W TPQ is better in this case, but I'm not very sure.

The Antec TPQ-850 has an 80Plus Bronze rating for efficiency.

The Corsair HX750/850 has an 80Plus Gold rating for efficiency.

http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_r...50W_Report.pdf
http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_r...50W_Report.pdf

Also the Corsair HX750/850 have a 7 year warranty as opposed to 5 years with Antec.

I would say the modular cabling on the Corsair units is much better. Below 200W the Antec TPQ-850 can be horribly inefficient....less than 80% as witnessed here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...=Story&reid=58

Both the Antec and the Corsair have excellent voltage regulation and keep the reins pulled in on the ripple and noise.

The looks of the units would be up to each individual.

Noise wise the Corsair units would be slightly quieter.

I'm not really sure because I'm new to building...the problem is I would like to have as much airflow as possible, but the HX 750W costs about $10 AUD more than the TPQ, but has 100W less...

I know this sounds backwards, but try to invest less thought in the actual wattage rating. I know that with Corsair's PSUs in particular, that rating is showing the continuous rating, but their actual maximum capacity can be 100 to 150W more.

I can certainly vouch for the HX series being a damn good PSU though. And when you're talking about PSUs of this caliber, the decision between the TPQ and the Corsair can almost come down to appearance and price.

So the efficiency and max power load might be more on the HX?

Sounds like an incentive to me...

Maybe, but if I remember correctly, both are pretty awesome PSUs. However, if I were choosing between the 2, then I would definitely get the HX750W. I mean, I kinda like blue.
Especially that shade. But if I thought the TPQ looked better, then I'd get it instead. hehe

Shame my case is going to be red/black...

I've always been told not to skimp on the power supply.
My reccomendation would be the Corsair hx850
Arguably the best psu ever
