Push/Pull Question

I'm trying to figure out the arrangement for a push/pull setup. I see that term floating around the forums frequently, but other than the obvious "push" and "pull, I'm unsure as to which fans do what tasks. I've assimilated a mock up including my current setup so as to determine the arrangements of my fans. Note: the second fan has not been attached to my H50 yet. I will probably do that when my 1200 comes in (and my i7). Someone take this photo and correct it if I'm on the wrong track. I will include both pictures. Feel free to mockup the "blank" picture with the correct arrangement assuming two fans are attached to the radiator.

Note: I know my cooler is an H50. This is not a question about this cooler, but rather how a push/pull air setup works. That is why I am asking this question in the "Air Cooling" section of the site.

Not sure what you want happening with a H50, perhaps the hot air already inside your case being pushed out of the case?

That is, attach one fan that is sucking air from the inside of the case and pushing air out the back of your case to the radiator on the case side; and attach another fan to the outside of the case that is sucking the air off the radiator and pushing it backwards.

In the case, the arrows would be going in the opposite direction you've drawn them - to the left. The whole idea of push/pull is to move as much air as possible in a uniform direction.

As of now, it is (obviously) bringing air in from outside of the case to the radiator, hence the direction moving right. I assume if I move the air from the case out (to the left), this won't do much cooling? I'm unsure.
Well, as long as the push/pull is set up correctly, it should do the same amount of cooling - the same airflow will be passing through your rad just in different directions. To keep the inside of your case nice and cool, I suggest you set your fans up so the air flow out of your case, not into (the air will be hot because it's passing through the rad).

So my question to you is, are you able to turn that fan attached to the rad around so it pulls hot air off the rad and pushes it out of the case?

Yes. This calls for a temp test.

Why would you want to pull hot air into your case. The front fan in your case should pull cool air into the case. The rear fan on your rad should pull the hot air out the back.

When we speak of push pull on a rad we mean 2 fans on one rad. The fan mounted to the inside of the rad pushing the air out of the case thru the rad and one more fan mounted on the out side of the rad sucking the air out in the same direction out of the case as well. Thus Push Pull inside fan pushing out outside fan pulling out.

Air flow in your case should flow from front to back and out.

A blow hole in the top of the case is a nice mod too. Heat rises so its easy to push it out the top as well.

I like to always have a extra cool air pulled into my case thru the side door and pushed out the top as well.

I have the Antec 900 (about to be 1200), so both cases have huge exhaust fans on top. The only reason why I hesitate with the fan flip is due to Corsair's suggestion. Other reviews have specifically noted that Corsair designed the H50 to pull in air from outside of the case for whatever reason. They suggest that you not blow the air from the inside out.

Ok I use antec 900's as well btw way great choice.

Ok that case has great air flow both in the door front and top. That means lots of cool air inside. Push or pull the hot air out always end of story hot out cold in.

They don't know your set up. You see they don't want to see some numb nuts with no fans in the case sucking all the hot air in the case out thru that poor little 120mm rad. so to dummy proof the thing they say suck the cold air in the case thru the rad. giveing the rad the best chance to do its job blowing all the nice how air right into the case where the great big GPU card you got need to breath as well.

The heat for that need out too. the antec case has lot or air flow phuse pull do what ever you like just get that hot air out the case

Thanks. I'm gonna go test multiple fan setups and record temps. I'll post on the forums. Your theory makes sense.

Btw add one fan inside pushing out and one on the outside sucking out move that air man. 2 good air flow rated fans about 1900rpm one in and one out.

A rad is not effected by the case temp as much as you think. it not like air cooling. My water cooled rigs run the same temps almost year round + or - 2 degrees. I live in TN and I am a air conditioning hater because I smoke
