Q6600 Overclock 3.4 Double Check

995 Views 26 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Tommytom22
Hey guys just wanted some input from some experienced OCers. I have my vcore set to 1.5v which is pretty much the upper limit for air cooling but my VID on my G0 is 1.312 which really sucks lol.

Seems like my times on Intel Burn Test takes a lot longer than screen shots I have seen??

Any input would be great! Thanks!

did those screen shots also use as much RAM as you're using?

Not 100% sure I understand what you are asking? I have 4gigs of mushkin ascent. I set the Intel Burn to max stress.

The ram is at 2.0v with 4-4-4-12 T1 timings.

+rep for the response
We got the same exact VID. Mine does 3.5Ghz 1.5v in BIOS massive vdrop.

I have an 1.2875 VID Q6600 running at 3.4GHz. Temps are not bad, I'm running mine at 1.35Vcore I think, and getting some similar temps as you are.

Maybe the game doesn't support SLI? Or clean your drivers with Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner Pro.

Temps are good for that much voltage and yes at those speeds IBT does take that much time, especially if you are in vista. With 4Gb and q6600 at 3.2, IBT took 140sec for me in Vista.

Hey tommytom22, what model board you working with? I ocing my asus P5N-T with
Q6600 and wanns know what you got your voltages set at.

+rep for all lol. I just cleaned my drivers with Driver Sweeper and I think it did help thanks for the suggestion!

Hey coolaid, I have a 780i with my Vcore set to 1.5. Most other 6600 OCs Ive seen tho don't need to go that high to get 3.4. Any other questions Ill be happy to answer

Great temps, but thats some terrible vdroop.

Nice OC though! I need to pick up a TRUE one of these days. Hitting 3.2 Ghz on the stock cooler, i bet i could push 3.6 on a aftermarket.

Keep up the good work.

+rep thanks man. The Vdroop sucks lol. I should take that reading as the actual Vcore right?
when i overclock my q6600 it seems to run slower than stock speed, am i suppose to adjust the voltage and ram timing? I would only clock it to 3ghz so i don't have a big heating issue.
Yeah you will probably need to increase your voltage in order for the overclock to run stable and therefore you seeing an increase in speed. Usually setting the Vcore in the BIOS to 1.425 is a good starting point. Then set your FSB to 1333 for 3.0Ghz.

You can fiddle with the voltage from there most likely being able to reduce it until you get it to the lowest point where your CPU is still stable.

You can test the stability of your CPU by using programs like Prime95 or Intel Burn Test. There is tons of info around the forum on these programs.

Hope that helped

Those are some good temps. Just today I ran IBT with my Q6600 @ 3.4 and my temps shot up to 71C. Prime temps are only 60C.

Yeah I found the same IBT is harsh lol

Gotta love that TRUE huh? Those are fantastic temps for air-cooling. Is your TRUE already lapped?

Yeah I lapped the TRUE and the cpu the other day. Good way to waste a few hours lol. I saw a huge improvement tho, crazy what 20 bucks worth of sandpaper can do haha.

thank you very much, so i should increase my voltage to 1.425 then work my way down to find a stable voltage. Does anyone know a stable voltage instead of going through this process?

It really varies from chip to chip because of differing VIDs (the stable voltage for each chip i think someone may correct me tho) and other variables like your mobo, BIOS, ram, cooling, etc.

So its a trial and error process no real way around it

EDIT: You can look here for some inspiration
