Im planning on getting the Q6600 soon. and im just wondering if you can overclock this chip to 4GHz on air?
i will be using a GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard btw...
help needed
thanks and +REP
i say u got NO chance of getting past 3.6ghz stable ... maybe 3.6 if ur very lucky!
as u stated ur just getting it .. i assume that its a newer batch and with probly a 1.325VID ... u wont get past 3.4ghz stable ... sry
I believe there's little discernible difference in performance between 3.6GHz and 4.0GHz.
I'm playing with a Q6600 and I'm currently at 3.6GHz on 1.44V. I haven't played with the voltage to see how low I can run it. I just kinda skipped everything and went to a 400MHz FSB. I tested it for seven and a half hours with Prime95 with no errors. I think my TRUE isn't seated properly, though, because my temps at max load were 67, 67, 62 and 62. I have two 110cfm Slip Steams in a push-pull configuration. Maybe I need a bigger washer and do a better job of applying Shin-Etsu.
Anyway, if you're looking at a dual-core processor, I would go one step up and get the E8500. If you're looking for a quad, I wouldn't settle for anything less than a Q9550 even though I already did.
Q6600 will not get to 4GHz on air. Especially the chips now..
It is greater depending on what you do.
If you probably game, E8400 will probably run better in games.
It is what utilizes the core.

Not true, I had a 1.325 VID that I had clocked at 3.55ghz stable with a TRUE.
My current chip is a 1.2125 VID that Im fairly positive I can get to 3.8 easily under 1.5v
It depends upon your intentions. I'm quite happy with my Q6600, though a dual-core processor would likely serve my purposes better. This rig is intended for gaming only. If that's what you intend to do, then an E8500 should serve you quite well.
I don't understand the mentality of buying a Q6600 just to have a quad. I'd rather get the newer Q9300 if you want a budget quad. They perform about the same as a Q6600 and will run cooler. I haven't looked, but the Q9400 might not be too much more expensive than a Q9300. And I'm sure if you look around (eBay, craigslist, here), you can find one on the cheap. I found my Q9450 for $240 on craigslist.
I just got a 1.315V or whatever Q6600. I started OCing it today and so far I got to 3.4GHz at 1.475V with my Tuniq Tower 120, it errored right away at 1.45V, so I guess there's not a whole lot of room left. I think I might be able to squeeze 3.6 out of it tonight, which is "ok" by me. I was expecting/hoping to get 3.8-4.0 with my set up. But again, I haven't played with any settings aside from FSB and CPU volts.
Sorry, I meant it's at 3.6 right now, not 3.4 (was at work and thought it was 3.4)
