Hi!

I bought these today for a upgrade.

- HD5870
- Q8300 Quadcore
- p31 Neo 2 MSI motherboard.

Setup now:

500W Coolermaster
P31 Neo MSI motherboard (775)
Q8300 Quadcore, 45NM VID: 1.1V - - 2.5GHZ @ 333 FSB
2 x 2GB DDRII 800Mhz
HD 5870

My goal is to overclock this processor to at least 3.2+GHZ. But finding it EXTREMELY difficult to get ANY stable overclock and its making me nuts.

Someone else on the forum made a 3.6GHZ overclock look like peanuts. I cant even get to the 2700Mhz
I'm doing something very wrong here but i dont understand wat.

I've tried to just get a stable OC without touching the Vcore, just losing the timing of the ram (4-4-4-12) + getting a 1:1 ratio together with a little boost of the memory voltage.
With this i should be able to get at least 200-300MHZ out of this without even touching the Vcore. But, i cant even get to 2700Mhz without getting errors in Prime95.
So i raised the Vcore with 0.125. Nothing.
Raised the Vcore with 0.200. Still errors.
Raised the Vcore with 0.300. Still errors.
Etc etc.

Eventually the Vcore was raised with 1.0V making it 2.125Vcore and it stopped booting.

I allso tried a simple 3.0Ghz overclock with:

5-5-5-15
300FSB
1:1 ratio
2.1Vcore

this should work, it should at least boot to bios, but whatever i try, adept, a just nothing works.

What am i doing wrong with overclocking?

With that P31 board you wont get very far...
You may be hitting a FSB wall and you MAY be able to get past it by boosting voltage to your NB...

Also if you really volted that cpu @ 2.1 you should read up on the forums again
You're going to hurt that cpu. The most ive volted mine was 1.45 but i tried 4ghz with that.

looks like you're using 800mhz ram so keep it at the rated timings and you should be fine
When you get past 900mhz you can tray to loosen the timings by going higher in the numbers.... usually like 55515 to 66618.

The best board/memory combo for this processor would be a P45 or X48 with 1066+ ram.
You can grab a P45 UD3L or a PQ5 Pro turbo for around 100$

If you can return this stuff you should... See if you can grab a Q9550 and a P45 board from where you got this stuff from.

Thanks! I wont be going for that Q9xxx. Because im at the absolute end of my budget. I think the Motherboard is broken because when i reset the bios, and raise the Mhz of the processor by 100. (2600Mhz). It wont boot. At all. Not even with a 1:1 ratio or a 0.100 more Vcore. So im bringing it back and getting that PQ5 board that supports 1066Mhz (got 6GB of 1066Mhz)

Thanks!

Wel, i allready opened everything and such i don't think i can come back and trade everything in for other stuff haha.

A Q8300 OC'ed at 3.2+ and a HD5870 should be just fine

In all honesty though, there are better options out there.

Like the other guy said, I suggest going with a P45 board if you want to OC

I'm going to have a similar setup to this soon, but with a Q8200

I don't like this motherboard, I'm never going to be able to overclock

You can definitely go higher than 2.8 with ur CPU. A Q8200 is exactly the same as a Q8300 except without the extra .5 multiplier.

Q8300 = 7.5 X 333 = 2.5ghz

Q8200 = 7.0 X 333 = 2.3ghz

Most Q8300's can oc to 3.4 pretty easily so you should be able to get at least 3.2 out of a Q8200.

P31 @ c2Q a miracle combination
4 Real yor mobo sucks for even 4 duals.. weak power supply to CPU by mobo, sucky P31 NB and everything on that motherboard makes you dead in water..
Go P45/X38/X48 with at least 6 phase power managment on CPU and than even think on ocing a Quad..
SORRY..it is how it is..

Sorry for hijacking the thread but it was a couple of months old anyway

You should settle with what you've got.. And with that low end memory it's not good at all..
Dont worry,B happy ..

Can't be too nightmarish if you've got yours running at 3.6GHz...
