Q9550 first OC: need feedback

Hi all

I've just done a quick and dirty OC with my new Q9550 in my current Asus P5Q Deluxe mobo.

All I've done is turn FSB up to 400 w/ CPU multiplier 8.5, everything else auto. = 3.4Ghz.

Voltage is 1.36 from auto according to CPU-Z.

Its held up to a 3Dmark vantage run, half an hour of prime95 and copying 200Gbs across hard drives, maxes out at 55C temp (ambient temp ~18C).

I'm pretty happy with it so far but have a few questions for the experts

- is it safe to leave everything, esp the volts, on auto? I'm getting 1.36 from auto according to cpu-z.
- is it OK to leave speedstep, EIST etc. on? I've read varying things. Must admit that it hasn't seemed ot be an issue so far and its nice to have it automatically drop to 2.8 when idling. (w/out OC it drops to 2 it seems).

Thanks in advance

nothing wrong with leaving speedstep on i think
ive run a q6600 at 3.1 for 2 years with spedstep and no problems (power concious FTW

as for volts, id try to get the lowest possible setting for a stable run of benchmarks, while ensuring it dosent heat up too much...

hope this helps...

As long as it passes the stress tests and it stays under a reasonable temperature your fine. Keeping AUTO on is okay, if you have problems you can always change the settings on the ones that are on auto.
thanks, I lowered it to 1.325 (vdroop it seems, cpuz shows 1.316 but what the hey) and doing the benchies now. If its stable at this I'll leave it, happy enough at that level since my VID is 1.3
Set your voltages on Manual.

1.36V is the maximum for 45nm CPUs.

http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SLB8V

Run stress Tests & minimize your voltages until it becomes unstable, then return to previous voltage settings that was stable.

This way you dont waste energy & produce more heath.

I ordered an Q9550 too, still waiting for it.

You can overclock it to 4GHz+ if you have a good motherboard & cooling.

Oh my God, I'm jealous of your temperatures. How are they so low!?

it drops because it is throttle(sort of like 2d and 3d setting for graphic card. 1.45 volts don't ever go above that, 1.4 is safe for 24/7. Try lowering the voltage(look in my sig rig). Speed step is fien to have on.

Nice temps! push pull and a single fan on my triple rad can't cool my proc in prim95, it over loads it lol(keeps going up and up. Gaming wise I hit 45c
mine only hits 55c when i stress test above 4.25ghz m8

good air cooler+good ambeints ftw baby yea

what stepping is your CPU? i have a similar setup (see sig) and i'm at 3.4 ghz at 1.2 vcore hardset in my BIOS, e0 stepping q9550.

and i drop down to 2.4 ghz, not 2.8, that's weird.
Dunno what stepping, I'm at work so I'll get that off CPU-Z when I get home.

I didn't think the temps are that spectacular, under load it hits 55 degrees (ambient 20 degrees). Here in Oz its going to have to deal with 35C+ days lol. I'm using an OCZ Vendetta 2, don'/t think I did a great job w/ paste etc. as I'm a CPU installation n00b but obviously not too bad either.

Did eventually lower the voltage to 1.325 in BIOS, VID is 1.3 so happy with that.
Turns out its even better than I thought. I was using an old version of realtemp so I updated + fixed incorrect TJmax to 95 (its a rev E0) so temps are even better than I thought!!!

Also managed to shave more off the voltage, can't be bothered to keep going lol.

Pls find attached cpuz + realtemp shots
