I found a cheap i5 system on Craigslist that I am considering buying for parts. System has an i5 750 with a P55A-UD3 (not the best P55 board) and 4GB XMS3 DDR3.

Would the CPU/MB/RAM combo be a worthwhile upgrade for my sig rig?

What kind of OC can I expect to see on the i5?

I guess it would be worth it, you would probably break even if you are going to be selling your parts.

i5 750 @ 4ghz is like a q9650 @ 4.5ghz or more.

if you find a good a chip you can pull of like .. 4.3/4.4 on air easy.

i agree with kingt . i finally got my rig 4ghz stable am running prime as we speak and when i last did my 3dmark 06 i killed it with a 29708 score. i am competeing with i7's i see no need to leave the 775 platform.. when the next huge tech break comes in a year or so i will consider it more but as of now chasing all the intel upgrades with all the differnet sockets, i will hold off.

!long live and love long the q9550 /775 platform!

Thanks for the opinions.

FYI if I were to sell my Q9550 and some other stuff I have after buying the system off Craigslist I would be getting it (i5, P55A-UD3, 4GB DDR3, 5770, 750W PSU) for about $300 CDN which is a steal...
Just an FYI: you could sell your 775 system for a healthy sum

Well actually I'm in the midst of getting an HTPC together and I got an E2160 for free. Apparently these little guys have a hell of a lot of OC headroom (E21*0 series makes a number of showings in the 2GHz OC Club) so I will be saving my UD3P and Dominators for the HTPC and some overclocking fun with the E2160.

The Q9550 will probably go however which offsets the price of the Craigslist system in the OP quite a bit....

It all depends on how often you upgrade or build a new rig tbh.

I personally wouldn't upgrade from a quad to a i7 750 since sandy bridges is out and socket 1156 is being phased out.

You Q9550 @ 4ghz is still plenty of cpu for the games/programs that are out and probably handle everything you throw at it and then some.

I have been on my q9550 and dont really plan to move off of it for another year to a year and a half. So I wouldn't take the other parts for $300. Save the money and do something else with it.

I think you mean successor

OP, I would definitely not upgrade. An i5-750, even overclocked to 4GHz, would still be pretty similar performance to your Q9550.

The top-end C2Qs are still pretty damn good CPUs, especially at 4GHz.

Why did you upgrade from yours then?

(If I am remembering correctly when I think that you had one

Because I got a good amount for it, and it was worth the jump.

Does that make the Q9550 any less good? I think not

I just wanted something faster, and I admit that I don't need it, but I want it.

Ah fair enough. Yeah, the Q9x50's still sell for a ton of cash, which is why I'm thinking of upgrading but not thinking of getting one.

I've just gone the same route...upgraded from a Q9400 to the i5 760. Slight improvements here & there...just wanted updated hardware without spending too much cash. There is no loss in your decision as long you understand the move you are making & sure about it
