for 2 years now my "abit ip35 pro" and q9550 with 4gb ram serves me well at home.
i have the opportunity to upgrade to "asus p7h55-m le" with an i5 760 for no cost.
os is windows 7 x64.

should i do it?
the rig is usually for gaming, web browsing and downloading.
shall i gain fps?
shall i feel snappier in the desktop?

i love my ip35 pro and i feel strange to give it away.!!!

The architecture is more powerful yes, but I can tell you it's not going to be earth shatteringly different.
Went to my current setup from a Q9650 - only reason I switched platforms is because I needed a good OCIng mATX board.

Which brings me to another point; that H55 board is not going to be good for OCing.
I'd plan on ditching that and picking up something cheap and/or trading should you make the move (something with good mosfet cooling, more pwr phases, 8-pin etc - plenty of solid P55s out there still).

While the i5 will be slightly faster clock per clock, I don't see a reason to upgrade from a very capable chip to a slight more capable chip.

That Q9550 will still remain a fast performing chip for a few years.

Yes, it's a free performance boost, albeit a small one.

Core 2 Quad are still monster chips when overclocked. And while some say it won't matter much, it has 12mb of cache. Much more than the i5.

thats true because the upgrade will be free, but i will lose the esata connection and i have a external lacie 1tb with esata support.
also abit bios is full of options and i overclock q9550 to 3.4ghz.
asus p7h55m le bios is very minimal of options.

really i dont know what to keep.

Why only 3.4GHz? In my Gigabyte GA-P35 DS3R I could overclock my Q9400 to 3.6GHz rock stable. You should be able to do 450FSB with that mobo. So 8.5x 450FSB = 3.825GHz. CPU should do it easy. At least you should be able to do 440FSB on that mobo.

I wouldn't bother given the Motherboard you're looking at, you'd be looking at a marginal gain at best. Hold out, imo.

If so I see no reason switching to a 1156 i5 760 that cannot be overclocked at all because of that motherboard.

Your 460 might like the i5 better. Fermi in general seems to prefer the ix stuff over 775/AM3.

If you play Starcraft 2 it'll help as well. Just sell the crap board and put 30 or so out of pocket and get a decent overclocking board. It's something new to play with if anything.
