WE ARE ABOUT to enter a PR battle of epic proportions about quad core. No, not performance, abilities, price or anything else real, just over the definition.
Intel says it has a quad core first, and AMD says no it doesn't. Intel says it is selling a real quad core and AMD says it not. Both are right in both cases.

The crux of the argument is simple, Intel's quad core parts are two Woodcrests on a slab of fiberglass, and the two dice are separated by almost a cm of space. Single chunk of silicon they are not. If asked, Intel will tell you that any customer buying a Kentsfield or Clovertown will have four cores under a heat spreader, and 99.999% of them will never take that off, so functionally it is a four core. You buy it as such, you plug it in as such, and it operates as such.
Meh, but then you can get into the whole "2 dual-core dies equals a quad core" idea....Here's how I think they run now:

2 dual-core dies
4 single-core dies

Its quad core when there are 4 physical cores in one socket. It can't be any simpler, and to be honest, AMD just wants to take the credit for "first quad core", It can't be any more obvious.

They're arguing over a technicality. Intel was first to deliver dual-core and will be first to delivr quad-core. AMD was first to deliver native dual-core and will be first to deliver native quad-core.

Intel might be the first to quad-core on one die too.

But why does AMD feel the need to make an ass out of themselves?

If they can say "We have the only real quad core" people who don't know what the exact difference is may think that the "Real" quad core works better/faster/more effeciently.... AMD just wants to make $$$

The only real difference between dual die quad core and native quad core is power efficiency. Native quad core will be better able to manage power consumption, but it pretty much ends there.

Well you know what. Intel invented sliced butter and AMD invented maple syrup. Which one is better is up to you....

64 piplelines is NOT EVEN CLOSE to 64 cores.

nice try though.

A pixel pipeline is a core. A totally separate core. That's how they're able to disable them without killing the entire core. The same way Intel and AMD disable cores without killing the other core.

nice try though.

Your attempting to compare two entirely different things. And I still really do not think that its another core.

A pixel pipeline is not a full processing core. Its more of an FPU than anything else.
