QUESTION - 3 way sli wtih 9800gt OR 2 way sli with gtx285

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to the 'high end' computer building scene.
Here is the basics of what I've put together ofr my rig so far...

cpu: i7 920
ram: 6gb (3x 2gb) Dominator gt kit 1866mhz
hdd: 2x samsung 1tb sata
case: antec 1200
psu: corsair 1000hx 1000w
mobo: asus rampage 2 extreme
monitor: 2x LG 22" 1080p

I've been doing a lot of reasearch into this computer. I'm more into using programs like maya, ps, and video editing. I still want high video peformance for gaming and my two screens. I'm either looking to do 3 way sli with the 9800 gt or to do 2 way sli with the gtx 285.

for me the prices would be:
gtx 285 sli $1200
9800gt 3 way $500

Most things I've read have ppl saying to wait until newer stuff comes out and to stick with 9800's.

I personally wouldn't opt for 3-Way SLI. The scaling generally becomes considerably worse after the second GPU. If I were you, I'd grab a single GTX285 and see how that goes. If you really need a performance boost you could pick up a second one later. Or, you could opt for a 5850 or 5870 (and possibly XFire later), since that Asus Rampage 2 supports XFire, as well. My 2 cents.

I think your idea is a good one dude. One 285 is practically the same price as 3 of the 9800's.

well
if you have the financial resources, DEFINATELY go for the 285 SLI,
great cards, will scale incredible good
I would never advise 3 way SLI, its not worth it what so ever. You will only see a small difference from two to three cards and only really in bench tests. Two 285's would be better than three 9800's, by a long shot. However, I would say wait for the 5970.
I think right now a single ATI 5850 overclocked will give 9800GT triple SLI a run for their money! And you could always add another one later.

If I were buying a high end machine from scratch right now, I'd go with ATI since their new cards support Direct X 11 and are pretty good bang for buck.
From what I've heard, 3 way sli scales horribly, so the 285s are a much better choice.
Anyway, doesn't a single 285 kill two 9800gt's?

But that's if it's well within your budget

Yeah, I'm thinking he should go ATI with that rig, as well. If you want top-end performance you may as well get DX11 while you're at it. I agree the value is excellent, especially with the 5770 and 5850.

I'd have to agree about going with ATi 5970. It'll smoke your 9800's by a pretty good margin in everything, then when you crossfire nothing will even come remotely close.

Agreed, the 5970 is one of the fastest cards on the market (Asus MARS?) and should be much better than the 285s. They will annihilate the 9800s.

It's also almost the cost of one 285, according to your pricing on the 285s and newegg's pricing of the 5970.

9800 GT does not support 3-way SLI. Do you mean the GTS 250?

When will you be making your purchase? The next Nvidia card is rumored to be coming out in January, with mass availability a month or two after that. Whether or not that is the card to get when it comes out, it should shake down the prices of other cards.

Most don't but some do.

If you are looking at tri-sli then the cards will need to have two sli tabs each.....

id have to go with th people saying to move to the new ATI's
I dont know what peeps are talking about,3 way sli scaling badly.I have tri-285's and have never had an issue with bad scaling. Now they are right in gaming you will not see much difference in going from 2 to 3 cards, but will see the difference in benching and folding.Only question is,is tri-285's worth the money only for bragging rights.Dont forget a badass psu for 2-3 gpus.
just so you know the new nvidia cards have a billion more transistors in them than the new ATI cards.listen 15% of the new ATI cards are already RMA'd...Having loose fans over the gpus and rattling noises, thats what they get for coming out with the cards to early, shouldve waited IMO,Im glad nvidias waiting and taking there time for these new cards.there gonna be badass.

i think a single gtx285 is better than 3 9800gt
9800 GT triple SLI isn't possible, there is only a single SLI connector on each 9800 GT.
tri sli is on 88/98gtx and later high end cards only.

i would say 1 285 and add another if you need to, yes the 5800 is a better card but the cuda will have you going much faster in ps and other apps that take advantage of it where the ati will only benefit you in games.
