Question About Dark Knight Fan

856 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  gymenii
I'm gonna make this quick, I have CPU fan control set to "voltage" in my BIOS. The fan doesn't spin at all (LED's are just slightly lit) while system is idle, basically I just need to know if this is ok? Temperature wise I am fine but is there any risk of damaging the fan running it this way?

Your fan should be fine.
It will shorten the life a lttle bit, turning it off and on like that, but its not too much to worry about.

The motherboard undervolting could be dropping too low.

I wouldn't trust a setup where your fan just stops in idle conditions, no matter what size your Heatsink is, its just not safe.

I do realize the fan is being undervolted. I'm not worried about temperatures, my 17-18c ambient temperature plus my Antec 900 case could probably passively cool my CPU just fine. I'm basically just wanting to know if undervolting this fan to the point to where it's not spinning is harmful or not.

The stock fan for the DK is PWM,I would set your bios to that.

Gyro
Undervolting it won't hurt it but, it should be set in bios properly.

Thanks guys, I do realize its a PWN fan, I just don't like the fact that with my BIOS set to PWN the lowest this thing spins is 1200 RPM which is much more than what it needs.

You should leave it set to PWM in BIOS and setup a fan profile in easytune5. There are other fan control utilities that may work as well.

That's weird.... I have it set to PWM [I think, it's set to "auto" actually] and it spins at around as 800RPM in idle conditions.
best to just pick up a really low RPM fan then
Set it to PWM and turn auto fan control off.

had the same problem with the fan on my Xigmatek not spinning under the Auto setting (which probably was Voltage). Switched it to PWM and now it spins at idle.

+1

I can't believe I have never used this application before. This is exactly what I needed, I now have the fan idling at 970RPM and fully loaded at 1500RPM. Core temperatures peaking at 63C under LinX with ambient of 17C and Vcore of 1.381(Bios). This is the silent performance I was looking for.
Thank you.

Your welcome! It's what I've been using for years.
