Question about x4 965

Is it the i7 equivalent?
Does it require ddr3 memory?

I'm running a Kuma 7750BE atm and my m-atx board will do am3 chips but I don't think it will run ddr3 memory. Just thinking of upgrading before I throw down on a 5970 gpu so that i'm not bottlenecked.

AMD 965 is inbetween a Core2 Q9650 and i7 920 at stock. 965 also supports DDR2 and DDR3. You have to check if your board supports the CPU though. There is a newer 125W C3 stepping so try to get that one. 955BE is also a good choice for less money and is 95W now with the newer C3 stepping.

In gaming you won't notice any difference , but in rendering it's quite noticeable. Also 955 is a better choice , that 200mhz bonus is not worth the extra cash.
And no, you don't need ddr3 ram , you can use it with your mobo+ddr2 ram , since it is backwards compatible

On the most part for high resolution gaming, there is little to no difference with an i7. But the i7 is a superior architecture and will beat the X4 965, although for some applications the X4 is better. The good thing about the X4 965 though is that it will work in both AM3/AM2+ sockets, so you can either use DDR3 OR DDR2. As for the 5970...it depends on your resolution, although if you're using the max resolution on your monitor of 2048 x 1536 then I'm sure there would be very little bottleneck if any at all. Another thing to note is to get the C3 stepping of the X4 965, which has an updated IMC, will overclock further and a lower TDP of 125W instead of 140W, which would be better for your motherboard.

how can you tell if it's the c3 stepping?

I mainly use the pc for gaming but I also do stuff with the Adobe CS4 suite.

Because it's also the new 125w version.

Simply buy the 125w version, and you're guaranteed the C3 stepping.

HDZ965FBGIBOX -> 965 BE C2 stepping
HDZ965FBGMBOX -> 965 BE C3 stepping

C3 ---> look for GM near the end of the model number.

hmm, my mb is am3 compatible but it only lists the 955 and not the 965. Wonder if it will still work and their list just isn't up to date.
Flashing the bios to the newest updated one should fix that.

I mean their website lists it that way. I'm at Work so I can't check mine.

Also, ziggy dark knight work on these?

^Your "latest" BIOS was released way back in April. And they listed the Phenom II 955 as the highest that BIOS will support. So I highly doubt it will support the 965, let-alone the new revised one with C3 stepping. Otherwise they'd of listed the "965" on the list when they posted it (the BIOS) in April. If you install a non-supported cpu, you'll run into all sorts of problems. Like BSODs, booting issues, stability problems, you name it. Has happened to my brother when he installed a 955 on a board that supported nothing higher than the 940 BE. The BIOS read it all screwy, and he couldn't boot into Windows, and also kept getting BSODs.

Why not just get the 955 instead? You'll save some money and get the same performance with just 1 multi up
