I have a P4 2.4A Proccessor, and have recently overclocked it. I have succesfully gotten it to 2.9, but unstable. Whenever I try to run Prime95, it exits and also I had a Windows Explorer error when writing this... v.v

I havent touched my Vcore, and Speedfan is reading it at 1.39V. During OCCT tests, it shows 1.33 to 1.38-39Core on both speedfan and OCCT. Should I raise it to test stability, or what do you guys reccomend? Also I am guessing RAM is not an issue, as my frequency in CPU-Z is 203.8MHz and I am barely at 163.0 FSB, 652.1 Bus Speed.

Any ideas what is wrong, or what to do? Any support will be greatly appreciated, as I really want to see how far I can go with this chip.

EDIT: The funny thing is it only happens when I run Prime95...

EDIT #2: Alright, update. Ran OCCT, stability problems! So I just lowered it 3MHz until I can find my stable and wait for a response. My BIOS say my voltage fluctuates between 1.33-1.38. It has a option to raise it to 1.375 I think, and it goes on. Next "upgrade" is 1.400

Do not run the divider.

Your PSU may be the issue. 450W ain't really going to cut it.

I have the same model CPU as yours, and I'm doing super! Thanks to Wowza.

If FSB is faster than the RAM frequency, then raise the DRAM frequency in the BIOS. That'll do the trick of getting the ratio to 1:1.

It looks like you're running a 4:5 divider, which is exactly what I'm running on my 2.4. I tried dropping it back to 1:1, and it took a significant performance hit. Although 1:1 in best in theory, sometimes running a divider that favors RAM is a good thing.

^^ yea, exactly.

Humm I have to agree with Zip, your going to need a new PSU. this currently is the best bang for your buck.

For now, your probably going to have to run more vcore, stock probably isn't going to cut it.

I got a 2.4B running at 2.84GHz whats the maximum you suggest for clock speed?

I know you can get higher man, but your powersupply is killing you. I am not shure of any good Auzzy shops, but some good PSU's sell for around 30 dollars american. If you get a new PSU, 3.2 range and more is possible.

Yes, as Taeric above me said, I am running at 4:5. I am really new into this overclocking material, so how could I set my RAM to run at 1:1 and not into 4:5? >.<

EDIT: I just found in my BIOS these options.

DDR Frequency; where I could set it to 266 or 333MHz

Configure DRAM Timings by SPD; where I could see the timings

Set CAS
Set RAS
Set RAS to CAS length I think
Precharge
Burst Length

I also had 2 other options I could use. By the way, I havent flashed my BIOS. Using the one that came with this motherboard.

Your CPU runs off of a 133 MHz external clock, so the corresponding DDR equivalent is DDR266. If you select that in the BIOS, you'll be running at 1:1. Since you have DDR400, though, there's no reason to cripple your RAM like that. If you test it at DDR266 (1:1) and DDR333 (4:5), I'd be willing to bet that you'll see improved performance at 4:5.

Assuming you stay at 4:5, you should be running at stock speed and voltage at your current OC (204 MHz RAM speed vs. 200 MHz stock speed). As you up your OC, you may need to loosen timings and/or increase vdimm. If you're able to pull a crazy OC on the CPU (as 2.4As have been known to do), you may want to drop back to 1:1 if your RAM becomes a limiting factor. If you ever have questions as to whether your RAM is the cause of instabilities at given settings, run Memtest86. It's a little utility that does a thorough RAM test.

I'm going to go against the crowd and say that 450 Watts should be more than enough as long as it has good amperage on the 12 volt rail. That's something you can't check in Windows. You'll either have to look at the sticker on the PSU or check the specs online if you know the model. I have a 2.4 with a 9700 Pro and have never had problems with a 380 Watt PSU, though it is a high quality one.

Have you locked your AGP/PCI frequencies yet at 66/33 MHz? Not doing so can cause all kinds of stability problems.

It is recommended that you keep your CPU at or below 1.525 volts vcore and 65°C load temperature. From what you wrote, it looks like you have tons of room to up your vcore as you up your OC. Justr be sure to keep an eye on your temps. Although that is the recommended max., it's better if you can run signficantly below that point.

Yes, my frequencies are locked at 66/33 MHz. It was the first thing I did actually, haha. I read, from your post, that I should stay at stock speed and voltage. In other words, should I run it as it is. You also say 200MHz stock speed.

Err...gosh, Im so lost...The 200MHz vs 204 MHz RAM Speed is the Front Side Bus vs My RAM?

Let's get all of the pertinent numbers into one place -

133 MHz - CPU stock speed (stock external clock speed, FSB is 533 MHz)
200 MHz - RAM stock speed
166 MHz - RAM "starting" speed with 4:5 divider

163 MHz - CPU frequency when overclocked
204 MHz - RAM frequency when overclocked at 4:5

Since your RAM is 200 MHz stock speed, it can almost certainly run at its stock timing and voltages when overclocked to 204 MHz. My suggestion earlier was to not mess with RAM timings since it's only overclocked 2 percent over its stock speed. Yes, the system is overclocked by around 23 percent, but the RAM was underclocked to begin with. The net is a very minor overclock on the RAM.

Does that make a bit more sense?

Yes, it makes more sense. Now I only have 1 more question. Should I disable the Configure DRAM Timings by SPD or leave it enabled as it is, and try to continue my overclock?

Just trying to get to at least 3.0GHz, more if possible, but sadly either my CPU, RAM or other factor is limiting me.

P.S: My +12v rail runs at 15A

Also, running at 165.0 External Clock Speed, my frequency raises to 206.3. Seems *something* is raising my RAM and tweaking my timings.

I have a 2.4 Northwood running 100% stable at 2.97. This is on a crap 350 watt power supply with an 18 amp 12 volt rail. My settings are below.

Vcore - 1.7v
No Mem Divider (1:1)
FSB - 165MHz
Timings - 2.5-3-3-6

That's the 4:5 divider that we've been speaking of. It takes the external clock speed x 5 / 4 = RAM speed. For the sake of finding your CPU's max, set the RAM to DDR266 in the BIOS. Leave timing by SPD enabled. Overclock the CPU as far as you can. You won't likely get it far enough to stress the RAM at 1:1 (you'd have to OC from 133 MHz to 200 MHz...possible on that CPU but a stretch). Once you have the CPU maxed out, revisit the RAM as you can likely squeeze more out of that than running it at 1:1.

Alright, I went ahead and tried to place my CPU/RAM Ratio to 1:1. Im going to shoot for my highest overclock at the moment, and then going to go back to 2.8, and work my way up playing around with my RAM timings. Hopefully I'll get the true result I want, 3.0GHz, and a good and happy new material in my book on the way.
