Questions about SSD's

909 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Killhouse
Im looking to replace my WD Veloci for a couple of SSD's so i need some help understanding a few things, and which ones to get.

- What is Trim?
- Does Trim work for Raid 0?
- Will i need a Raid card, or is on-board fine?
- Does Trim Replace defragmenting?
- Are they suitable for benching/gaming/video work?
- If so, How long will these last with the above use?
- Which brand is best/better one to choose?

I plan to use these for my main OS/Games/Benching is there anything i should know? any tips? my Budget is around $500 Thanks.

Hey there, good idea.

Trim, basically, allows files to actually be deleted from an SSD. Due to the nature of them, typical deleting only results in sectors appearing to be overwritable, even though they still contain data. This makes SSD's take longer to read/write because it searches through more of the SSD before it actually does it's job. Trim actually deletes the info, to help maintain performance.

I'm quite sure Trim does not work on Raid's, and from what I've read, a raid card will always help, but it only really shines on more than 2 drives. And as long as you get one that's big enough, I've heard no complaints for the type of useage you plan on using them for, be it gaming or video work. They are just really expensive in higher capacities.

I think it's generally agreed upon Intel has the best drives, but they cost more. OCZ, Patriot Torqx, and a few others are also very good, as more commenters will say.

My intel 160gb drive was $530 cdn, by the way.

Oh, I forgot to answer about lifespan. SSD's have very long lifespans, and TRIM is supposed to make it so they are fast for the duration of that time. No moving parts = reliable, and efficient.

Also forgot to say, never defrag an SSD. They don't need it.

With that price you could save a little more and get the 160 gig g2 version from intel.
Thanks nseaton1 +1, do you know if Trim will be released for Raid 0 Anytime soon? will there be a performance hit on my drives if trim is not used? and besides the storage capacity being a difference will read/write speeds make any difference in performance lets say the intel x25 250mb/Read 70mb/write VS. OCZ Vertex 240mb/Read 140mb/write

True but i am more interested in Speed/Performance then storage space.

hey, sorry for the delay, meetings here at work.

I have not heard of trim coming for raid. I too was dissapointed, because I wanted to Raid two 80's instead of getting a 160. Most manufacturers are releasing things like wiper.exe to kinda do the same thing as trim though, and I'm not sure if that works on raid or not. Now, the thing that makes Intel drives so awesome is random access and small file moves. This is where they dominate. I use my SSD for games and the OS. So I only write once while installing, so I don't really mind that intel drives are lower in that department, because most of the time I'm just reading. SSD's feel so much faster, any good branded one is going to feel great. Make sure you read some articles on www.anandtech.com for a lot of comparisons and explanations too.

you should never defrag a SSD it will significantly reduce its lifespan

Don't look at sequential performance... it does not matter much on an OS drive. You need to look at random access benchmarks. Intel G2 and Indilinx (i.e. Vertex) perform close enough IMO.

RAID TRIM is a function of the storage controller. There is only one company that has announce RAID TRIM and that's Adaptec on their newest line.

For G2 and Indilinx drives, there are applications to do garbage collection.

Yup, just like I said. In fact, the first thing to do is go into Windows Scheduled events and turn defrags off.

Ah ok thanks, I just want to keep the SSD's in tip top shape and that bugs me no trim for raid.

Will performance be hindered at all with no trim?

I never managed to get mine to the used state before i had trim, and I moved 400Gb through, there is a small performance hit for the the intel and a little larger for the indilinx IIRC without trim. There is "Tony Trim" from someone on the OCZ forums thats a combination of two apps that can be used to return an SSD raid to a trimmed state - it works on any SSD'd IIRC.

It's working well for me.
I link this in every SSD thread.

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531

It will answer all your questions about SSDs and help to show you which are the best on the marketplace. Reading that will teach you so much, I'm not sure if it goes into detail about trim though I think it has been updated recently. Enjoy!

EDIT: Here is their update
