On Saturday my father-in-law ask if I could build him a cheap computer that would mainly be used for internet and DVD copying. It has been awhile since I have really looked at low power cheap systems as usually I am all about looking for fun stuff for myself.
Since he wont be gaming or anything really CPU intensive, will the Intel E2200 suffice for the job? Is it more than necessary? I can save $20 bucks my using the E1200. The E1200 is slower (1.6 GHZ vs 2.2GHz) and has less cache (512KB vs 1MB). I am going to use a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L micro motherboard, its $50 and seems to have good ratings on Newegg.
Also, he wanted it to be wireless, I have never looked into this before for a desktop. Anyone have any suggestions on a card? There are also USB attached wireless cards that attach using the USB outlets, will these work as well as a card? Either way, any suggestions?
the atom is a pretty cool little board if you are going for low power, its got a dual core, maxes out at 2gb of ram i believe, no pci-express, but you got pci for your wifi card
Well, its not low power as in low wattage, it just is not a gaming rig. I guess I'll have to read up more on the Atom.
Below is what I currently have picked out for him:
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L, $53
G.Skill 2x1GB DDR2 800 $29
Intel E2200 2.2 GHz $70 or Intel E1200 1.6GHz $50
Western Digital 640GB Green (not variable speed) $70
Rosewill USB WireLess Dongle $20
2x LF 22x DVD Burner $25 each
Apevia X-Qpack2 with 500watt PSU $95 or other cheap case with PSU ~$50
Total $387/$367 for the E2200/E1200 with the Qpack2, $342/$322 without Qpack2
What I picked out seems to be a good quality, small, quiet computer. It can perform all he wants, shouldnt have heat issues and hopefully will last a little bit of time.
