Is it new or used? If I have the conversion right, that's about $300 USD, and the cheapest you can get a GTX280 from Newegg is about $330, so I would say that it's good deal, especially considering the prices for hardware I've seen in Europe.

Its 100% new but no box or anything. (It was an auction at a store)

Also would a 450W PSU be enough? He has an E6600.

Also he only has a single 6pin PCI-e connection, with the fear that the 8pin won't beshipped with it can he run it with a single 6pin (and another 6pin since i have a 2molex-to-6pin converter) or does he really need that 8pin connector? And if so are they easy to get a hold on?

If it is a good quality psu then it should be able to. Most reviews show total system power, with a quad + 280 somewhere around 350 to 375Watts.

It still doesn't give much headroom though.

What brand PSU is it?

If it were me, with that card especially, I would make sure my psu actually had two dedicated 12v gpu lines, whether they are both 6 pin or not.

Its a Crossair 450W
Here's the listed power requirements for a vanilla EVGA GTX280:

Quote:

Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 40 Amp Amps.)

An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector and an available 8 pin PCI-E power connector

Only solution I can think of is use an adapter that converts two 4-pin molex power cables to an 8 pin PCIE (If he had gotten the GPU new in the box it might have included an adapter). But I wouldn't recommend it, he might just be looking at having to get a new PSU as well. The company that makes his current PSU, Corsair, makes some other really wonderful PSU's. He could get a Corsair 650TX from newegg for about 100 USD.

Good deal on the GTX 280, by the way.

You can definitely get some kind of 6pin to 8pin converter, that is no problem IMO, however, it is the fact that there is not secondary 12v gpu connector on that PSU that is the problem, regardless of whether it is 6pin or 8pin.

I think it will work, assuming he doesn't have 7 other HDDs, a ton of other stuff with the processor and especially GPU over-clocked, but you will be close.

If he is going to OC, the processor, or/and (especially) the gpu, I don't think I would do it.

What brand is it exactly? Some vendors say 2 6-pins, some say 1 6-pin and 1 8-pin. Check the vendor's web site, it should have the recommended power requirements listed.

No, hes a to big of a ***** to OC.

I'll think we'll go with the 2 molex to PCI-e 8pin solution.

Thanks for the help. And if it doesn't work he just needs to get a good PSU.
