Ya'll might want to try it in Windows 10, as the alpha W10 drivers are newer that the latest Windows 8 beta.

I flashed it to my R9 290 lol just to see. Here are the bios readings. Well at least it boots and boots into windows. Don't think the drivers will install though. In win 10 build 10135

Notice how his Radeon thinks it has 8GBs of RAM. I doubt it'll work unless we can mod the BIOS to instead think it only has 4GBs.

Quite honestly I did not expect it to even post much less boot into windows. My R9 290X is out for RMA...so tried it on my R9 290. Yeah I am either brave or an idiot. (j/k due to the dual bios switch)

Yeah those are the best performing drivers to date. Though I did switch my 290 to the 15.200.0.0 set since that was what the few benchmarks on the web were using for their 390s to compare.

Gonna try to install the 1040 build but pretty sure after reboot the device will not start.

Meh.

Well, it does suggest that the 390X is indeed a Hawaii rebrand. If the chip itself wasn't exactly the same, I don't think it would post.

What exactly is "Grenada"? Is it the codename?

There's gotta be something different in this chip... AFAIK 280x didn't get any new name compared to 7970...

Just as I figured the drivers will not install, like other bios I have tried in the quest for unlocking this card.

I have to agree.

But now after installing that bios, based on the hawaii info and memory info I pulled...I am not so sure about what is unlockable and what is not. FOr eample my original bios shows in the reading it is not unlockable. When flashed to the 390x bios it show unlockable.

We will find out in less than a week.

Can't wait if/when BIOS is succesfully modded to work on 290X and detect as the correct 4GB. Definitely would enjoy my turning my 290Xs to 390Xs. I should probably check to see what kind of OC I can get on my VRAM though.

i flashed all 4 of my 290x cards with the leaked XFX DD 390x bios. My cards are still showing 200 series in CCC/control panel. They also show 8gb when they are only 4gb. I have yet to see if the VRAM mixmatch is an issue. I can say i had to slightly bump my voltages up to make them stable. I gained performance in FSU or so it might just be clocks/driver version difference. I did notice in WoW my game plays way smoother than before with crossfire 4 way on (im running 6400x3600 resolution) I will tinker around more today.

on driver 15.2 leaked also i think?

I know its not apples to apples exactly but...for some data

9614 score
390xbiosx4 - 15.2 drivers - 3DMARK FSU stock gpu (390x bios defaults 1050/1500) cpu(almost stock 3ghz max turbo)

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5122971

9644 score
290x bios on 14.3 gpu/cpu clocked higher though 1075/1500gpu 4.4 cpus

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4345472

8920 score
290x bios stock clocks 4.4 cpu

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4345413

only differences are driver version/gpu bios/clocks - i gained over 300points(GPU SCORE) at lower clocks 1050/1500 vs 1075/1500 - but it could just be driver versions. Regardless somethings actually seem to be playing better an ill check into it more as well.

290x's are ref sapphires

EDIT: also forgot to mention my wattage went up seemingly. I'm in the 1500/1600watts at my kill-a-watt when running stuff like [email protected] 4k. 3dmark FSU i was over 1600 and barely under 1450 throughout the test. I will do some single card testing at some point, and i could directly compare driver/ bios/wattage results maybe

Supposedly the 300 hawaii has a new "stepping" or improved process which enables lower power consumption and higher clocks. That would explain why you had to bump voltage to get stock 300 clocks stable with a 200 series chip.

Well in regards to VRAM, it appears once i pass 4gb i get blackscreen/crash/reboot. Early to say just yet but yeah i'm not sure why the cards are still seen as 200 series in CCC/control panel/gpuz. either way it's really bizzare if this is a 390x bios. I may give a shot at the other ones linked above just to see since they are 4gb

It's a shame he lowered memory clock to 1250, I wish I knew how people were modifying the 290/290x cards bios without ruining the signature.

The MSI 390x Gaming is 1100core/1525(6100mhz)memory, That'd be a great one to mod to 4gb for the 290x.

At least one of ID differences between 290 and 390 seem to be PCI Revision ID field.

Special R9 3xx only drivers recently released on AMD site (15.15) require R9 390 to have RevID=80, while original R9 290 Hawaii have RevID=00.
I think it should be possible to override default revision ID by BIOS, but I dunno how to do that. At least I've tried some obvious things, but failed.
And for sure, usage of R9 390 BIOS in R9 290 won't do that.
Someone with good knowledge of ASIC straps is needed to comment RevID changeability.

Without updated RevID R9 3xx drivers won't install on R9 290 and universal drivers would work as with R9 290 even if R9 390's BIOS was used.

It should be easier to "convince" R9 3xx drivers to work with R9 270 and with Tonga chips, because some Device ID / Subsystem ID combinations are allowed to be detected as R9 3xx even with RevID=00, so BIOS replacement or modification should do the trick.
Still, that's not as interesting as R9 290.

I tried the 4gb 390x bios and it worked but i noticed with either 390x bios my cards arent stable completely. Even when i up voltages and clocks they just became fairly unreliable when they were fine before. I suspect it could be memory timings or voltages but i am not going to mess with it anymore at this point. I may just order the 5 monitor sapphire 390x for my eyefinity setup if i can crossfire it with 290x's. I may end up on 390x crossfire just because i am not sure about fury and its vram. Then i may coast until the real fury hits :)

I always seem to suffer for jumping on a new flagship and then months later something better comes along that i would have happily waited for had i known. i.e. 290x 8gb over 4gb.... i may try to hold out this time..
