Ram question in games

603 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  xandypx
Well yesterday i picked up a stick of Kingston hyperX ram and put my computer threw a bench mark on crysis and at the end of the benchmark it said i only have 2gb ram when i have 3 im wondering if its just a glitch with the benching program or my computer isn't allowing the ram to be used.

I'm not sure if i put this in the right section so sorry if i put it in the wrong section.

Your GPU is taking some of the RAM in this case. It shares system memory.
Your 9500GT is a low profile card?

Oh ok that would explain it i suppose by why would my GPU be taking ram when before when i only had 2gb ram my GPU wasnt touching it?

Im not really sure i think its ether a low range card or mid i dont really know

I didnt think an add-on card would take ram because it has its own anyone else think it works that way?
I have an 8400GS in the kids computer that has 128 onboard RAM and uses another 128 system share. Manufacturers do this all the time.

Oh ok kinda making more sense but since my graphics card is only 512mb why would it wanna take 1gb least i understand this it would help the graphics card.

I think part of your problem is that you shouldn't have a 1GB RAM module mixed with a 2GB RAM module. different size RAM can't run in dual channel mode

The other possibility is that your Mobo's memory controler may not be compatible with dual sided RAM (your 2GB stick) and threfore sees the 2GB module as a 1GB module
Yea i kinda guessed that the size difference mite be an issue even though my mobo is able to run different sized ram modules. XP is showing the 3gb ram but its just the games that aren't showing it. Doesn't matter i will eventually be getting another 2gb stick of the same ram .
Mobo supports, link. Chipset supports link (1.3.2).

Support Dual channel DDR2 667/800 memory interface up to 4GB. Only has two DIMM slots.

Supports maximum memory bandwidth of 6.4 GB/s in single-channel or dual channel
asymmetric mode, or 12.8 GB/s in dual-channel symmetric mode
assuming DDR2 800MHz

So that says different size DIMM's work?

The largest memory capacity possible is 4 GB,
assuming Dual Channel Mode with two x8 double sided un-buffered non-ECC
DIMM memory configuration

Says double sided works.

What do you do? Run CPU-Z how much does it see? Does it see all 3GB's? If so all is fine. If not on the "memory" tab if it sees two? Does it say dual? If so only seeing 1GB of the 2GB DIMM. If it says single then not seeing the 1GB DIMM at all.

What do you do? Switch the DIMM's.

Different size DIMM's do run in Dual Channel. Rules for trusting, BIOS>OS>applications.

In CPU-Z shows the full 3gb. Its showing its in dual channel for some reason. In the tab that shows what each ram is in each slot it shows the ram as 1gb Samsung and 2gb Kingston so i think its alright.

You need to place a limitation on this statement.

Different size DIMMs do not run in Dual Channel if you have a Motherboard designed around the Intel Chipset architecture supporting Dual Channel mode, (AMD uses two memory controllers, and doesn't have this limitation), if you place different sized, or density, RAM modules in the same Bank on a Mobo that has more than 2 memory slots. (excluding the new i7's using triple channel)

My mistake in my original post, of not having looked at the OP's Mobo, to realize that his board has only 2 memory slots that equate to two banks of memory supporting only 1 RAM module each. You can have different sized or density chips in opposite banks, just not in the same one.
