hey guys i was planning on removing my mobos heatsink and replacing the crap thermal pads with as5. my northbridge will be getting very hot after doing some ocing with an 8x multi and was wondering how exactly you remove the heatsink covering it...

i removed the screws surrounding the area of the nb but the heatsink is one big unit and there are only those spring pin things to remove now and i dont know how. i really dont want to break them so any help on how to properly remove them would be appreciated a lot. thanks guys.

At the back, there should be two things that you push against the main pin and It should pop right out. (Someone give a better explanation please?) Thanks

As daekspearxz suggested at the back of the mobo, the heatsink should be pressed down by pins that have two heads that spread open when pushed to tighten the heatsink. Squeeze the two head tips of the pins together and push out to seperate the heatsink from the mobo (at least that's how it works on my 780i).

You just take the nb and sb screws out including push pins on the sb. Like said, squeeze the underside of the pins towards the hs and it should just be able to pull off.

The hs for the mosfets are separate so you can leave that one on if you want.

There are pins on the back of the board that look like this:

you need to squeeze them together, then pull the heatsink out from the other side

When I tried to take off the heatsink of my rampage, I needed a hairdrier. That stuff dries to an really hard paste. It takes a couple minutes to get it off.

I'm guessing the P5E uses the same stuff. I might benefit by removing mine and applying some Shin-Etsu. Anyone know what kind of temperature differences I'd see? If it isn't drastic, I won't bother. I hate removing my motherboard and I've only done it once.
I used pliers to squeeze the pins together. The hair dyer for a few minutes to heat the paste for easy removal. Bought a bottle of acetone to clean the paste off, rubbing alcohol didn't work well.

1ºf or 2ºf maybe.

I read a magazine article that tried all the difference types of thermal compounds... the difference between last place and first place was like 3ºf or 4ºf if i recall correctly. so i just say half to go for the median.

Then it's not worth tearing my system apart. I don't have a problem with temps as it is.
