Ramsink or x16?

Hi,

I just purchased a Gigabyte P55-UD4P motherboard and a Vapor-X 4890 2GB.

The problem is that the Vapor-X doesn't fit in the PCI-E x16 slot because it has a ramsink on the back of it (ref. Image 1) that collides with the board's heatsinks that are around the CPU (ref. Image 2 (the heatsink with the Gigabyte logo)).
So currently i have the Vapor-X in the PCI-e x8 slot.

My question is:
Can i remove the ramsink on the back so i can fit the card in the x16 slot?
Or should i just keep it in the x8 slot?

Thank you.

If it were me, I'd use a dremel to nibble at the heatsink a bit to make it fit. I wouldn't want to run a 4890 2GB on a x8, it just seems wrong. Like putting skateboard wheels on a monster truck.
I guess that would void my warranty, plus i would have to remove a pretty big chunk of it.

What are the side effects of removing the entire ramsink?

overheating ram.

its fine in the 8x slot, but if it bothers you just make sure your ram is at stock and you can take off the heat syncs.
That's a damn shame....

Pop off the stock back sink, save it. Get some of these VRAM sinks and get creative with that one that will be under the mobo NB sink. Make it work.

Good luck.

Edit: just be careful if you ever have to remove them--use a hair dryer or something to heat them up some and turn them gently from side to side--don't just yank them off.

Being on OCN and owning a P55-UD4P and a Vapor-X 4890 would make me presume he isn't a 'run at stock' type of dude

Yeah you'll void the warranty, what do you want though. Making do, or POWER, unlimited power!

Remove the RAMsink and make your own backplate heatspreader.

That's a good idea, don't they sell those sinks (like his) online? Buy one and grind down the area under the NB mobo sink (on the purchased, similar RAM sink) , the heat will still spread throughout the entire modded sink and be disapated.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'll try crashdummy's suggestion, since i can purchase similar sinks to the one mentioned.
