Re-lapped 1.5 years later because first time was rush job

I think I have the first generation true extreme with 6 heat pipes on each end, purchased apr 2008 so about year and half ago.

Anyways, I lapped it when I first got it and I admit it was a rush job as I was too excited to have it installed on my new build.
temps 34 idle and 48 full load

So I was bored today and decided to take my time and re-lap it to a mirror finish.
temps 33 idle and 49 full load

Dropped a degree on idle but increased a degree on full load

Does this make sense?

2nd question...
seeing that 1.5 years went by, how much degree differnce would I get with current HS like prolimatech megahalems and noctua etc...worth an upgrade?

Don't change, its probably just the paste.

As for how much would you get, maybe 2C Max.
the slight increase in load temps may be down to a slightly different amount of TIM applied, or the heatsink might be mounted in a slightly different position, I have a TRUE (though the one with the 8 pipes) and it was a bugger to mount correctly.

As for the performance vs the current crop of heatsinks, you probably wont see any benifit on idle temps and full load temps you'll probably see a 2/3C drop in your load temps...mayyyyyyybe as much as 5C...but i'd be suprised.
Ahh..yes I did apply very little TIM this time around...

So whats the current way to apply TIM?

Use alot? or use as little as possible?

I do recall dual cores you apply a thin line on each end of where the core are, still true?
It depends, if you have lapped both your heatsink and CPU to a very flat, mirror surface, you only need to apply a very small amount of TIM in the centre of the CPU.

If you have just lapped the heatsink, i'd apply your TIM to the centre of your CPU in a small rice-grain shape.

Killuah i didnt think of that and that could be very well true.
Are my temps seem avg? Or should be lower?
considering ambient temp is room temp @ 72

yes I lapped the cpu as well, so i will try your method in the morning and see how that goes..thanks and repped.
Have you tried a washer-mod? You might not be getting enough pressure on the CPU since you took off some material.
It also helps lower temps a bit, I did it on my TRUE and temps went down by 4*C idle/load.

This is a good suggestion...I forgot all about the washer mod, I currently have 2 washers between my TRUE and the mounting clamp, lowered my temps by a few degrees too.

Just letting you know mirror finish lap vs "just removed all the grey" lap is exactly the same in performance.

This.

The important part is that its flat and the copper is exposed. The microscopic imperfections don't actually matter, since the TIM fills it all in anyway.

UPDATE
original lap - HS lapped only
temps 34 idle and 48 full load

1.5yrs later HS and cpu lapped, TIN spread around
temps 33 idle and 49 full load

And now washer mod with small grain of TIN in middle
temps 31 idle and 45 full load

I guess the washer mod helped. Thank you guys.

How does these temp look on par for avg or below avg?

Gratz on successfully getting ur temps down, even though it is only a few degrees
