All,

I just got a 9800GX2 and plugged it in as soon as I came home.

It went thru the driver installation and traditional restart. After I setup the the drivers and the Multi-GPU stuff... I noticed that the card was idling was 81-86 C. I looked around and it seems that those run VERY hot but still... I think that mine were too hot. This is at idle, stock clocks, room temp @ 27C and fan @ 40%.

I decided to take the card apart, clean the GPUs and HS.... and replaced the thermal compound for AS5 on both GPUs.

Put the card together and booted the PC with the card one more time. The max temps I am seeing are 65-70 C which is pretty good for replacing thermal compound. Similar conditions as stated above.

I am burning the card ATM and hoping that after a few hot-cold-hot cycles, the temps drop another few Cs.

By no means this will solve anyones "overheating" problems, but at least will give you another thing to look for if the card is running very hot.

Note: Those cards do run VERY hot. Damn!

The drivers that he listed had an issue with fan control and caused cards to over heat.
