reapplying TIM on 5770

1579 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  brettek
I'm getting 2 Asus 5770's on Wednesday and I was thinking about applying some MX-2 instead of keeping the stock gunk.

1. How much should my temperatures drop?

2. How do I take off a GPU cooler?

3. Anything else I should know that's different from applying TMI on a CPU?

Hey there.
I applied MX-2 to my 5770 and got a 5C temp drop.

To remove the cooler just remove the cross bar thingy here.

Its pretty much the same as a cpu.
Don't put too much on it.

I have heard these cards use less energy and thus run cooler so there may be no need to do this in the first place.
Remove cooler by unscrewing the backplate screws.

Get to the Gpu die and clean off the old TIM with 70% alcohol ( i use 70% other other like 90%)

Apply new TIM.

Reattach heatsink.

I think i got that right, IDK i just woke up.

That is what I did with my HIS HD 5770, replaced the TIM.

Wish I could lap the cooler, I'm not impressed with the cooling on the 5770's. Idles at 47c, Dirt 2 Demo 71c

Yes it is, I used a cotton swab to clean it too! The copper might be ok and all, but the finish on this one just plain sucks.

On the GPU -- make sure to spread it evenly and that the heatsink makes contact when you reattach.

I put a small dab on the GPU. A really small dab.

I did a wasteful test, I put on what I thought was the right amount of paste, put the card back together and then took it apart again to see how the paste covered/spread, it looked ok so I cleaned everything again and reapplied for real...

It doesn't take much.

Considering the heatsink has imperfections it may be better to put the TIM on there, might save you some airbubbels. As long as it's perfectly in the middle, what do you guys think?
