Recommend me some speakers please

I'm getting a new monitor soon but it doesn't come with any speakers so I'm planning to get some speakers I guess <- *****

I don't know much about audio except that 7.1 is the best.
I'm just wondering what kind of speakers I could get for $40CAD or less

or should I go for 5.1 surround sound speakers where I could get for $50?

I'm no expert but isn't 7.1 where it's at now?

I'd go with a Logitech surround system, like I said I'm no expert, but I bought a Z5500 or something like that a few years ago for my dad and they sound excellent.
Yeah I think you're right. It's at 7.1 now. Forgot about that.
Anyways the z5500 costs wayyy too much.
I just want some decent speakers.
You need to give us more info to work with. Do you have a budget? Do you primarily play games/listen to music/watch movies?

Surround sound is not necessarily better than stereo sound, particualrly if it's a simulated surround sound, like Pro Logic. Keep it simple and buy quality.

Are the Z-2300's out of your price range?
Z2300's = Best 2.1 system you can get for the money. I have been rocking them for a couple of years now. Unbelievable sound. You won't be disappointed.

If you have such a low budget, you won't be able to get a good 5.1 set.

I recommend a set of simple Logitech X240 2.1, they sound fine to me and it beats my 5.1 set.

But then again I know next to nothing about speakers

Budget was $30CAD or less mentioned above.
I mostly do gaming/ listen to music and rarely movies.

EDIT: changed budget to $40. I don't need anything pro. I just need something that's worth it's price within my budget.

Agreed. Any 5.1 system you can get for 50 bucks will get SMOKED by the Z2300's for another 50 bucks. They produce good surround effects by "staging" if you have a decent soundcard (which I highly recommend). Onboard audio isn't gonna cut it once you hear the difference with good speakers.

I'm not ready to cough up $100 for speakers and around another 60-100 for a good sound card. =[

Logitech Z-4's?

I would aim for something better than the X240's, but only because I know the difference now.

EDIT: The Z-4's seem to be only $20 more, and they would be worth every cent. Also, most motherboards now ship with decent on-board sound. You really won't need a dedicated sound card until you decide to spend a bit lot more on speakers.

Ok ok.

Nah..... Still, a bit over his budget, and for another 30 bucks he could have the Z's.

Okay since this thread is going no where. New question.

I have a new monitor with no speakers right now using onboard audio.
I have $40CAD willing to spend FOR NOW.
What are some cheapy cheapy crap speakers that are decent for $40CAD or less.
thanks for the suggestion ramsey
I'll think about it.
For now, I gotta rest. Too much audio facts lol
for personal audio, I would suggest headphones in that price range rather than speakers. You'll get better sound quality.

Take a look at koss portapros or sennheiser px100.
Are headphones out of the question? They give a much better bang for your buck as far as sound quality goes. Especially if you bump up to the $50-70 range you have some pretty good options available that will be comfortable over multiple hours of wear.
you could always just grab a stereo and use a component adapter :S, most stereo's have component now.
I'm using a old surround sound receiver with a pair of 15 year old bookshelf speakers i found in my basement lol, and they sound much better then anything i ever had before.

I think headphones will be out.
I got no where to plug it in anyways besides the back of my case.
