not really sure where to put this, but since it's an Intel system I figure I'll put it here. Anywho, I reformated my bro's computer yesterday and reinstalled windows... everything went as it should but then when I got into windows and Installed the drivers for his network adapter I couldn't access the internet. It's not behind any routers (of my own) it's hooked directly up into the LAN port in my office but no dice. I know the port works bc I switched it w/ the one hooked up to my computer and it didn't change anything.

Celly D 2.66 @ 3.0Ghz
Asus P5RD1-V mobo
1gb Corsair Value RAM
MSI 6600GT
SB Live Platinum (SB live value card w/ the live drive I bought off here)
WD 80gb ata hd
lite on DVD-Rom
Sunbeam nuuo psu

I installed windows just like I normally do so I'm not sure what went wrong. any ideas?

Well to get your internet connection working you need to register an ip with windows. In other words you need to get you internet service providers cd and install the internet or renew an I.P

I shouldn't have to do anything like that. I'm actually living in college-owned apartments and so there are network jacks in all the rooms... and I've never had to do anything like that on any of the other computers that I've built or reformated.

Yes windows will detect that you are connected but as theres no I.P winodws doesnt no where the default gateway is to be directed out to the internet.

If you installed XP SP2, sometimes there you get problems with the network, even with a newly formatted PC. Do you get the limited or no connectivity error?

Well, I'll try to run the network connection deal later today when i get back. I just wasn't really sure what to do because I've never had anything like this work before. It's always just worked... just a week or so ago when I built my HTPC I didn't have to do anything special to that rig and since I swapped out my mobo I reformated my main rig too and everything just worked.

oh, and no, I don't have SP2... actually the version of Windows I have is pre SP1

Open Command prompt, type: ipconfig /release
Then type: ipconfig /renew

Um, what version of Windows are you running?

I use XP Pro and I did about 4 installs this weekend trying to get my new system set up and all the HDs seen (long story LOL), and each and everytime, I simply plugged in the network cable, installed the driver for the onboard network adapter and I was on the internet, no problems. And my copy is pre SP2 for XP, I just had to log into Update and download ALL the patches.

Just wanted to clarify if you're using XP, just an older copy, or using a different version of Windows completely, like 2000, or NT, or :shudder: ME.

Also, is this DSL or cable?

Resetting your IP as Renegade suggested is probably your best bet, at least a good starting point.

it's windows xp pro pre sp1... so it's just an old copy of xp pro... and yeah, I've done lots of reformats/new builds and always just installed the drivers and plugged a cable in and been good to go. I'm going to try resetting the IP now

well I tried to do the network configuration utility and I tried to reset the IP... nothing. I also tried a different network cable. (even though the that is currently hooked up worked right before I reinstalled windows)

So, I guess it's time to email tech services and see if they can tell if there is a computer connected to the port.

any other ideas?

Is this an onboard NIC? Could be a bunk NIC. Do you have a PCI NIC you could try?

If you don't have a PCI card to test it, run a loopback test on the NIC, ping 127.0.0.1 and see if it's working.........also, reset your modem, power it off for about 5 minutes and restart it. Sometimes that helps........

no, I don't have a pci network card that I can try... it worked right before the reinstall...

yeah I did... but I'm thinking that maybe I need to get different ones. I installed the ULI drivers from the Asus website but I installed the ATI drivers from the ATI website... so maybe I should try the ones specifically for this mobo... I actually thought of that earlier today but I just haven't gotten a chance to look into it.

Ok, so I just doublechecked Asus' website and they don't have the ATI chipset drivers for winxp... they only have the 64bit version. they have the ATI display drivers but I don't need those as I'm not using the onboard graphics... I just need the southbridge drivers...

Alright, I installed a wireless PCI card in the computer... (I've had the card in a couple computers before so I know it works... I just wasn't using it at the moment) and it's doing the same thing. I can connect to my wireless router, but I can't access the internet.

any ideas?

Perhaps your router is dead.

If the wireless card is contacting your router, then the problem appears to be at the router.

I just had a wireless router die and it did the same thing. (LinkSYS, 9 months old, *** is up with that? I'm getting a D-link for $20 after rebate, stupid $80 LinkSYS)

It shows a connection, to the router, but sticks at "aquiring network address" and will not see the internet. The wired ports did not work either.

Try plugging the ethernet from your modem directly into your PC and see if that works.

If so, you know it's the router that's fried.

no, the router is fine. I actually have my HTPC behind it and my wife's laptop is connected to it wirelessly. so I know the router works. And my apartment isn't huge so it isn't a problem w/ the signal.

I'm thinking that there is a problem w/ the chipset drivers... I might have to install the full ATI driver package (including onboard video) to get it to work... then just uninstall the ati video drivers before installing the nvidia drivers... I just haven't had time to try that yet.
