Hey guys,

I got a lot of money for my birthday and feel like spending it, so the first thing I thought of was buying an 8350 to replace my unoverclockable 8120. The 8120 will not overclock and Windows will fail to boot as soon as I change the multiplier, this with two different boards. What do you guys think? Is the 8350 worth it? Will I notice a difference in games or will the difference be so minimal that it isn't worth it? I'm running two 7770s. Also, how much do you think could I overclock the 8350 with a NZXT Havik 140?

Budget? I would say a 8350 with a nice 8+2 or better board paired up with a 7870 Tahiti LE if you can afford it

But I already have the board and the GPUs, I'm only looking to upgrade the CPU. And don't really know if it's worth it.

I think it's worth it only if you sell the 8120 and use it to recover a part of the cost.

Are you sure your CPU is broken or did you leave your VCORE on auto? I have never heard of a CPU with a "broken" multiplier.

Not worth it in my book.

100% it is, I went from an 8150 @ 4.7Ghz and now I'm on a 8350 @ 4.9Ghz and yes I notice a big diffrence, things seem much sanppier in wondows too!

My advice, DO IT!

I went from a fx-8120 @ 4.75ghz to a fx-8320 @ 4.9ghz its night and day, just do it.

what's wrong with your current cpu?
it's not a huge difference between them, other than cost.

Sigh this is bad advise. It's definitely something that has to do with either BIOS settings or an abnormally sensitive windows install (which I would argue is broken)

You should have the cooling to run stress tests at 4.6 ghz with that havik.
That may be about the limit of your psu too, just my opinion.

@ OP

the thing is.. from what i see his performance is capped by his gpu (mainly) .. and the not overclockable cpu is making things even worse.

i´d point to several directions. if u replace the cpu and OC it it will be a benefit of course but in gaming your gpu is holding you more back,
than u expect to see in difference with the new cpu... and before buying a new board and bunch of stuff, a new cpu and gpu would bring you
that real difference for a medium cost.

i´d try to sell the cpu+gpu and get the cpu you have spoken of, OC it to hell and also get a new gpu with 2gb vram ( or more / a faster card, depends on your budget )
maybe a GTX660 (and OC it faster than stock ti) or spend a lil more and get a 7950, OC it and have a gtx670 like performance..

edit: i just saw you have xfire, what is nice but 1gb vram :/ .. mhh i´d definitely try to sell the cards, but this sounds kinda drastic ....

i had a similar problem years ago and assumed he have no other choice.

The motherboard is currently RMA'ed, that's one reason why buying a new CPU is an option, because I have to screw the fan an back on.

Yeah, I thought of this too, but my brother is building computer and then I might buy a 2gb one for myself and give him one of the 1gb ones.

Not worth it in my book.

What happens is the CPU runs either extremely unstable or will not boot into Windows as soon as I change the multiplier. On my old GA-90A-DS3 motherboad (yes I know, 4+1 unheatsinked) I only achieved a 4ghz overclock by blasting it with huge amounts of voltage. I bought the Sapphire 990FX motherboad assuming this would help my overclock higher, which it didnt. Instead the CPU won't overclock at all anymore. I tried overclocking on different Windows installs.

aah so u are RMA´ing the board right now, kk.
i´d say the 1gb xfire with your current cpu would still deliver decent performance and the cpu doesnt really hold back the 7770´s
guess yo current performance is somewhere between a gtx480 and gtx580 but with vram bnecks if playing full hd with downsampling.

an 8350 is quite nice.. i´d get a single amd gpu or sli nvidia.
ive heard that with amd multigpu´s mixed with amd cpu there may occure problems, but tell me if im wrong.

Personally, once you have got your miney back for rma, get atleast a asus sabretooth, they easy to understand and overclock with! Be sure to do a new install of windows, if that does not solve your issue try remiving a gpu, if it then worked that would give you an idea that it was a psu problem, if not then you know it is mobo settings or processor!

In terms of is an 8350 a good upgrade, YES it is an amazing cpu, i have replaced my 8120 for a 8350 and it is now driving to 7970 ghz models very happily!
