So I got a 768mb 460 (twin frozr)

It is for my htpc that runs on a stock i3 540. I am not ocing the cpu at this time because of the board and case.

I was not real happy with the performance of the 460. I game at 1080p, and the tv its hooked up to is 3D so I am also using nvidia 3dtv play.

I put my 560 in the htpc (silverstone GD05) but it is sitting at 60c while playing a movie.

So thats not gonna work. Is it worth it to return the card for the 1gb version? Am I going to get much of a performance boost? I'd like to get a 560 twin frozr for it but thats an extra 100 after the return of the 460, so its more then I really want to spend.

You need some overclocking on that cpu to see any performance gains, especially since it is a dual core. The 768mb is fine for 1080p. I don't know what else to tell you.

You can always look for a 560 ti open box from newegg, they are amazing deals. Look around 6-9pm mon-friday always refresh the page.

For that price range, I recommend a 2GB 5870, or 1GB 6950.
The 560Ti is a good option too.

I'm considering a 560 twin frozr. Need to find out if it will run similar temps as the twin frozr 460.

Your welcome. Seriously if you want to game don't build a budget computer. You can play at lower resolution but for the higher resolution and detail settings you are going to need more power. Common its simple.

I understand that. I didn't build it at first to game. But I still want it to be quiet. Not looking for crazy performance but good enough. I think I will go the route of oc'ing the gpu and cpu first.

Yes the 500 series runs a bit cooler then the 400 series. You shouldn't get a twin frozr, your just dumping all the heat into your small htcp case.

So you should return the 460 twin frozr, grab a 560ti(try to find an open box deal if you can). Replace the tim on it so it runs even cooler. Even add a hi-flo bracket. You can also undervolt the video card at stock speeds for cooler temps. Add a fan profile to your card so that every degree hotter it getts that's another percent fast the fan gets so it always stays cool. Also overclock your cpu. You can make your htpc really powerful just from doing little things.

Well the twin frozr idles around 40 and everything is cool inside the case. I threw in my evga 560 and it was at 60c doing nothing.

So that isn't going to work. I do have a fan profile set up which helps a lot with noise. I am going to look into oc'ing the cpu. But I didn't buy the board with that in mind so I am limited.

In your OP you stated that it was at 60c playing a 1080p movie. No gpu is at 60c doing nothing.

Ok thanks, for the time being I decided for the amount of gaming I do on this machine the performance is good enough.

Whats an open box 560 go for anyway? $225 ish?

Is this a gaming computer or an HTPC? Let's not confuse the two. You don't need a beefy graphics card to play 1080p video.

You can get BluRay 3D playback out of a $70 GT 430 card with lower clocks and less heat.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish with all of this. It sounds like you have a gaming PC and an HTPC, but now you want to game on your HTPC as well?

I think the main issue with having a powerful card is that there isn't enough CASE EXHAUST, doesn't matter how big of a heatsink you have if you can't feed it with cool incoming air and exhaust the hot air so it won't get recirculated.

Nah.

You would gain 7-8% performance boost if you get the 1GB version of GTX 460.
