RMA - Import Duties?

1310 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Afrodisiac
So the fan on my HX750 is defective, and I'm RMAing it, but unfortunately that means shipping it to California.

Shipping alone is going to cost me $33, so I'd rather not be responsible for customs BS.

By my reasoning, since I'm not actually buying or selling anything, and the power supply is essentially worthless to me, I shouldn't have to pay any import duties right?

Are there any Canadians with experience in this?

I think you will have to pay it, but Corsair should refund you for the shipping and tax costs
Michigan, US here. I work directly with a tool shipping company. You have about a 10% chance of your items being opened and inspected by customs no matter what upon return back over to Canada. You will be charged duty fees only if there is a declared value placed on the package and it is officially labeled as 'merchandise'. If it is just labeled as merchandise, I do not think they can charge you any duties, just an 'inspection fee'.

This happens to very few of the Canadian customers that I have to deal with, and when it does, Canadian Customs will contact you quickly and have your stuff ready for you to pick up after you pay the inspection fee. If the package is selected for random inspection, they normally XRay it, and do not rummage though it. You will get it back in a sealed, weird looking plastic bag.

Hope this helps, this is what I am familiar with.

label it as warranty return/repair. if the sticker doesn't ask that, write it somewhere on it. it should then exempt you from customs fee i believe.

Did you e-mail Corsair and ask them what to do?
