I'm in the process of building a server for a doctor's office and migrating away from the company that they are currently using for their server management and backup so that the billing and scheduling is all in-house. However, I'm going through Win SBS 2003's To Do List and configuring all of the options, and I cannot configure the internet because I do not know the router IP address. The cable connection is plugged into the router, then to a firewall, then to the GigE switch. So, I'm trying to figure out how to determine the IP address of the router. Currently there are seven other computer stations connected to the switch that are all communicating with the internet. Anybody have any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

Usually a router's IP address is 192.168.0.1 but it could be others.

I think that the default gateway for a connection on one of those computers will be the IP of the router, so check it out and give it a try.

The local router IP address is easy. Just do a ipconfig /all on a machine to which it is connected and read the gateway address. The public address on the router is a little more difficult to find. The easyway is to log onto the router and read the stats page. It should list the external IP address there.

EDIT: I suppose I type too slow!!!

Depending on the type of cisco router you will not have a nice interface to use for the settings. You will need terminal or telnet access. If you still need help identifing which is the external interface let me know. Just so I know what is the model of the cisco router?

The modem/router model is uBR900. I got the default gateway from this workstation and the DNS servers as well. Since they are all on the same workgroup, I would be correct in the assumption that all of the DNS servers on the other workstations would be the same, correct? In other words, the default gateway/DHCP address (as it is now, until we drop the other company and implement this server) and the DNS servers should be the same, right?

I think you are getting way to complicated.

I would just use the one server, set up profiles and home directory's.

Don't forget about SUS.

I say this because i doubt anyone will need to remote desktop the server.

And make shure your permissions are set up correctly.

No, I'll be setting up remote access, as the office is requesting that I be able to access it through VPN, so I'll write some scripts for that or something later on. I'm just trying to get through the Win wizard crap. BFRD - I'll be setting up the DHCP so that it hands out the DNS, etc, when we lose the company that is currently housing our billing and scheduling software (don't want to change it so we can continue getting money from patients!).
