Router Resets Itself

1173 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gonX
I have a 2wire 1701HG gateway for our new verizon dsl that we recently got. We had it a couple of years ago for the dsl we had b4 the last couple of ISPs (moved houses
). I think it reset on its own back then too but it didn't bother me because I didnt game as much as i do now and it was only about 10 seconds which didnt always disconnect me from the game.

Anyways so now im using it again and it really annoys me and i want to fix it because it will kick me out of a MW2 game. Sometimes it will happen like 4 times a day and sometimes once or not at all. 90% of the time the disconnect is where the broadband light will turn off and then orange and then green again (this happens in about 10 seconds). The other rare instance is where the power light will go off and then flash for a little bit, the broadband light will flash green for awhile for about 1 minute+ and then it will reconnect.

Any solutions to this? It seems to be happening ALOT more lately although it has always happend. Happend probably 8 times today (even while i was writing this post XD).

I'd probably start by getting a low-end battery backup supply and give your comm equipment some power backup just in case your gateway and DSL modem are really sensitive to power fluctuations....

Alternatively, check firmware on the gateway and see how far out-of-date it is...
Since you're running DSL your signal might be weak. Try to log into your modem and find the diagnostics page - it should be able to give you attenuation, SNR and other fine details. Please copy these details here.

Seems excessive for a modem lol. Considering i dont have that stuff id probably just buy a new modem if thats the case.

I found a page called diagnostics if this is what your looking for. It has not reset once today so the stats might be better than other times?
General Information
DSL Line: 1
Downstream Rate Cap: 1792 kbps
Downstream Atten. at 300kHz: 66.5 dB

Uncancelled Echo: 14.7 dB Suspicious - check phone filters and alarm
VCXO Frequency Offset: -63.0 ppm Ok
Final Rx Gain: 25.3 dB Ok
Impulse Noise Comp. Tones: 0 Ok
Excessive Impulse Noise: 0 Ok

Are there other diagnostics pages, as I really want to see what your signal to noise ratio (SNR) is.

Well, I don't know how your setup is, but if the modem / router are close to your workstation, you could always get one for the main system and then just add teh modem & router

Um on the same page it says something about Noise Margin in the table if thats what ur lookin for. Ill just give u the pic.

EDIT: Since its hard to see the mgn1 column goes down like this 9.0, 8.2, 8.0, 0.0, 7.9, 8.1, 8.3
mgn2: 9.0, 8.0, 8.0, 0.0, 8.0, 8.0, 8.0
mgn1 = noise margin at start of connection
mgn2 = current or final noise margin

This is all if the "noise margin" is what ur lookin for XD. My router also hasnt reset once yesterday or today, strange.

Noise margin is fine, that's not the reason for it.
Yeah that's the information I wanted. However it does not look like the noise margin is bad - anything below 6 dB of SNR can cause frequent disconnects like the ones you're explaining.
What about on that same page at the top it says uncancelled echo - suspicious

IIRC that's very common on very long distance DSL connection, but since your connection is dropping quite often, you should call your ISP and ask about it.
