Safe Free Email Domain?

681 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  hometoast
I'm currently using Gmail but after seeing an CNBC special titled "Big Brother: The Gov't is watching you" I'm now paranoid. Google apparently saves all of your emails even after you delete them. It records all of your searches and any information you pass through it.

Does anyone know of a secure email hosting/domain?

Thanks!

PS This is for personal use.

I really don't think they have the time to look at everyone's things that ever existed...

It is probably more like you raise red flags when you search for 'how to make a bomb' and other various assorted terrorist things. Then you may get watched. I doubt they are digging up an email you sent to your aunt 3 years ago or the pr0n you just decided to search for.

OCN has email!! (powered by Gmail haha)
Tinfoil hat wanted?

But seriously, they don't look through every email unless they have a damn good reason to target you.
Ive googled quite a few "questionable" things. I am a game designer and need detailed pictures and schematics for things like guns and bombs and buildings. I remember a few months ago googling bomb pictures and pictures of specific airports and planes in the same hour. Nothing ill fell upon me, and I am a paranoid kinda guy. I wouldnt worry about it honestly. Gmail in my experience offers some of the best service for free, and your information more than likely isnt ever even looked at for better or worse.

However, I wont use googles browser or OS. Thats putting far to much into one entities hands.

I don't think you'd get busted for Googling images.

It's more going on websites that are specifically designed to encourage terrorist activity such as Islamic Extremism sites.

If they didn't have a good reason they wouldn't be looking at your emails.

Besides, maybe you're a gun enthusiast
That wouldn't explain the airports though...

Why would the images go into Gmail?

Where are pictures stored? On websites. I dont just google images either. When I design something for a game, I want to know everything I can about it so that I can pick which details to show and which are not needed among other things. I understand that just images wont get me busted, but I go pretty far beyond just images.

ikcti, I email images, schematics, text and whole websites and other things to myself alot. Others also send me the same type of material via email. Easiest way to send that sort of stuff.

I'm uneasy at the fact that Google archives all of this information. Why? There is no purpose to archive this stuff on their servers. They store all the google searches you do, all of the emails that go through your account, and connect all the dots and plop your name on the top of the file. I'm not hiding anything, but its invasion of my privacy.

I dont like having all of my eggs in one basket.
They archive the stuff in case they get subpoenaed. They're covering their butt.

I don't worry about being super private with my electronic life. If someone wants information from or about me, they can simply go through my household trash.

Rent a server
Use a SSH tunnel to connect to it
Configure it how you like it

Actually, there is a big reason they would ever think to archive "your" information on their servers. They use search queries and link clicks to generate metadata for their search engine. Of course, the most popular sites get bumped to the top, not unlike a forum.

They shouldn't need to keep this data longer than my current session or maybe 24 hours at most.

Why not? It's not just for you. It's how the order of search results is decided. Although they don't need to know it's from you - probably the only info they need over the search itself is where you're from.
I'd be more worried with putting my emails on some random gypsy email that is supposedly safer than the name-brand.

Because Google is keeping a profile on you. You all should find a way to watch the CNBC:

Hushmail.
Honestly there really is nothing we can do. They watch everything and I mean everything. Every phone call, land line, or cell is recorded. Hell you can shut your cell off completely and the man can still hear you. Same with your webcam, they can watch you anytime of the day.

Seriously the man knows everything about the people and governments of the world. There is nothing we can do. The good news is that don't care as long as it does not affect there way of life and personal goals. I do things I am not suppose to and I know that they know. I do not worry though cause I know they dont care. I mean they have much bigger fish to fry than my little flounder ass LOL.
