I am down to three choices in the lappy that I want:

First question is, the 15 inch or the 17 inch?

-I am a college student, so I don't need the greatest lappy in the world, but I would like for it to preform well. If I get a 15 inch, it would be alienware as they offer the best specs/price for a Core2Duo T7600

The second question is if I do get a 17 inch, should it be Sager or Alienware:

The price for Alien lappy customized will be around 2,825 and the Sager at 3,050

-All specs are same except these things:

Sager:
-100 gb 7200 rpm hardrive
-Tv Tuner
-Nvidea 7950 GTX

Alienware:
-no tv tuner
-RAID 0, 2x100gb 7200 rpm hardrives
-Raidon x1800

I would pick by which offers the best warrenty and support. Since you are buying a laptop, you cant just swap out the CPU or mobo when somthing goes wrong, so a good warrenty is key. Also, I would call each compony with a fake support problem and see how well they handel it (i.e., how quickly you get through to someone, whether they speek english, etc). Just call with somthing stupid like "I cant find the power switch" or somthing, so they wont ask you for a sn or somthing.

I've had 3 Sagers. Sagers are nothing more than re-branded Alienwares with different plastic shells. Apparently, there is a single Taiwanese outfit making these super-high end generic laptops then branding them however you want.

Anyway, Sager tech support has always been stellar. I don't even have to return the laptop if something fails. They send me the part, I swap it and send the bad part back. After their one year warranty, they have an extended warranty with Phillips. They are nice people and don't give you any shiite. But, you have to ship back the whole laptop and wait 4-8 weeks. So, consider the "extended" warranty emergency insurance only. Make damn sure you get any bugs worked out of the system before the one year is up.

17" is over 10. Yeah, it replaces a pretty powerful desktop.

LOL!!! The 17" Sager battery is a 30 minute UPS. It stay's plugged in and COOKING at 300W.

EDIT: A few other thoughts. Forget the TV tuner. Forget raid 0 on a laptop. Uses too much juice. Also, if you go 17"...forget the term laptop. The footprint is huge. and it has 2 or 3 cooling fans on the underside. The whole unit gets very hot. For good general purpose college use? Go 15" or smaller and a core2duo. As much as I hate to say this...my corporate loaned Dell 620 is really good. It's fast as hell and the battery life is awesome. But, my eyesight isn't so good these days, so I can't use the tiny screen for very long.

No, this laptop is not to replace a desktop. My current PC is decent, but I think this lappy will beat it!
My biggest concern is weight and i am now worried about getting the 17 inch. I do a lot of walking to and from the university and I carry enough books that I do not want much more of a load.

The 15 inch Alien that I was looking at has following specs:

core2duo t7600 (2.33 ghz)
stock 512mb 667 mhz ram (i will buy 2 gigs on my own, cheaper this way)
100 gb 7200 SATA hard drive
Nvidea 7600 GT
8x DVD R/RW burner
WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD
extra 9-cell battery for extra battery life (I think it comes with a 6-cell)
intel Pro wireless, as well as lan networking
Intel Hi def. 7.1 audio

Battery life is not too much of a problem because I rent (for free) a room in the Library every day where I usually leave my stuff. I can keep it plugged in. The reason I considered going 17 inch is because of the video card. Isn't the Nvidea 7600 not that great anymore? Whenever I have nothing to do, I like to kill some time playing games and I would like them to run well.

With current settings, plus a 3 year warrenty, the 15 inch Alien will cost me $2,614.

Sager does not offer any notebooks that are 15 inch with Core2Duo that have a dedicated video card.

The 12 inch Dell XPS with simular options but with a Nvidea 7400 Turbocache comes out to be $2,675 so that is out of the question.

The benifit of the TV card would be that I could hook up the Universitys cable system to it and watch videos. I wish Alien offered that for there 15 inch laptops.

I just found a nice 15inch lappy for only $2,340!!! Please look at screenshoot for the specs... The only problem is that it is not a company i've heard of before. Has anyone bought ChemUSA before? I've heard that discountlaptops.com is a good store, so I am not worried there.

I researched the ChemUSA laptop a little bit more and have found out that it is actually a Compal HEL 80. Stores like discountlaptops or powernotebooks buy a bareback system, rebrand them, and sell them. I have read great reviews about the notebooks as well.

Cons:
-The display is not uxga
-only a nvidea 7600
-though a 15.4 inch, it weighs 7 lbs (this is not that bad as the 15.4 Alien is around 6 stock).

Pros:
-the price!!!!!!!

So, is there anyone here with a Compal Hel 80 and do you recommend me getting it over the Alienware?
