Saint's Row 2 vs. GTA 4

Before reading below, you might want to vote - I'm being very biased, since I've already made up my mind.

But if you want to see what I think and why, go ahead and read.

If you vote post why you voted!

GTA 4
Played GTA 4 quite a bit and frankly... not very impressed.

Huge fan of the series, played the original GTA (the top down 2D one, not GTA3 - which is what most people think is the 'first GTA' for some reason) all the way through San Andreas.

I think that the game built upon your freedom and property control until San Andreas, which included some awesome features like gang territories, muscle, weight, car mods etc.

Then, we have GTA 4. Yes, it is beautiful. It LOOKS great. The story is pretty good. The cars are gorgeous and handle beautifully. But it seems like they've removed all the awesome features from San Andreas, and even some of the earlier ones.

Saint's Row 2
Now, after I played GTA 4, I tried out Saint's Row 2. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, never having played Saint's Row before, and was thinking it'd just be a cheap GTA knockoff.

But damn! The freedom is incredible. I have gang territories again, and I need to defend them. I have a wardrobe that extends a mile, a ton of tattoos, crazy haircuts, and I can even customize my race/sex/voice. I can mod cars again, even more options than in GTA:SA! Not only that - but I can SAVE those modded cars, and a lot of them. I can even get them delivered to me, and they'll return to my garage if they get destroyed.

I can customize my gang. Their styles, their hand-signs, their clothing, even our gang tags. Even the cars my gang will drive.

Conclusion
SR2 > GTA4. Yeah, GTA4 has SR2 beat pretty squarely in the 'ooh pretty' factor. But the 'ooh pretty' factor only lasts a couple hours, or days at best. The gameplay is stale, there's really very limited freedom (even compared to earlier titles in the same franchise!)

I've always been a fan of games that had real freedom in them. (Starflight, Elite, Wing Commander: Privateer) So, GTA4 was a giant step BACKWARDS in my book. SR2 is what GTA4 should have been.

i disagree

sure SR2 has a lot more freedom than GTA IV and a crazy story, but the sheer lack of polish ruined it for me. that said, GTA IV was way overhyped, and a big step backwards in the freedom aspect.

i own and played through both on PC though FWIW

Why? Because 20 magazines told you it was THE BEST GAME EVAR?

At least I explained why I feel the way I do.

Oh, another thing:
REAL CO-OP in Saint's Row 2. Not crappy mini-missions.

Sorry but Saints Row felt like such an unpolished knock-off. It was terrible, the car handling was absolute junk and it looks worse than Vice City did.
Graphics > gameplay/features?

And since when has the GTA franchise ever had realistic handling?

GTA:SA > GTA4. They stripped SO MANY features out of GTA4, and SR2 expanded on the features of GTA:SA.
I have Saints Row 2 and GTA 4. GTA 4 looks really good, but its BORING.

Saints Row 2 looks horrible. But it is non-stop fun. Theres never any times where I think to myself that the game is boring. Theres so much more to do than just missions. GTA4 felt like a step backwards, honestly.

I like both, but SR2 is just leaps and bounds more fun.

And honestly the car handling in GTA 4 is junk compared to SR2... In GTA4 i feel like im driving a brick on wheels. SR2 is smooth and feels more arcadey. SR2 you can also pimp out the car, add hydraulics, bumper reinforcements, nitrous, all kinds of modifications, EVERYTHING is customizable, even the character you play. And you arent stuck with it, you can go to any Plastic Surgeon and change your character completely.
Wow ppl actually voted for Saints row
please tell me that this level of character customization is not awesome:

and how does that look anything like vice city? it looks pretty good (and DAMN that girl is ugly, but id rather be able to customize my character than be stuck with niko bellic the entire game)

But the fact you can DO it... makes it awesome.

You can REALLY make your character look like anyone you want. You're not stuck to a guy that looks identical for every player like in the GTA series. (Exception being GTA:SA, where you could customize weight/muscle/tattoos/hair etc, but not sex or race, and GTA4 took a step backwards)

I'd still like to see a real argument for GTA4. Everybody who's been pro-GTA4 has not really backed it up with anything. (Maybe you should link to all the reviews that told you to like it?
)

Note: GTA4 isn't TERRIBLE, but it's a step backwards, and if they had GTA4 graphics/engine/physics with SR2 everything else, we'd have what GTA4 should have been.

I like GTAIV's phsycis, like the car turns instead of leaning.

And I'm sure you will be able to mod like that in GTAIV, just give it time.

So GTA4 wins for having better physics?

Then your favorite games should be physics tech demos, right?

Well, then we come to the whole other issue of the terrible port of GTA4 to PC...
Granted, I haven't played SR2 on PC, so I don't know if the port is good or not... but you don't need to mod that stuff into SR2, since it uh.. is already there.

GTA4's physics is far superior in terms of REALISM, but SR2's is just funny. Hit someone and they fall like a ragdoll.... Shoot them with a shotgun and they fly backwards into the wall... Thats just more fun. Its like The Matrix physics... plus its a game, not a murder simulator... its supposed to be fun.

Yep... I like to take my tricked out hummer and slowly hit somebody, and if you get them just right, they'll ride on the front of your car for a while - see how far you can go, pop nitrous, and slam into a wall or another car and watch the body fly!

I couldn't agree more with the OP.

I played both and the whole time I was playing GTA4 I was wondering what went wrong. "San Andreas is much more enjoyable than this" was the overall feel me and my friends got playing it. I'm by no means saying it's a terrible game, it's spectacular fun for the first week, then it just gets stale.

When I saw SR2 on steam a while back I bought it as a bit of a joke to be honest. I despised the first one for being a complete knock-off of GTA but decided to give this one a chance. I agree that it isn't polished, there's glitches and the models could benefit from a few more polygons but it was still fun. I honestly think it says alot of a game that is unpolished and still more enjoyable than the so criticaly acclaimed GTA4.

I'm thinking most people who voted for GTA4 were simply impressed with the graphics. Either that or they felt the need to justify the purchase they made and may have regretted a week or so later clinging helplessly onto what the reviewers have told them.
In any case the order for me goes SR2>SA>Peggle extreme>Lemurs> GTA4

C'mooon let's see some real defense for GTA4's gameplay. We've already established that GTA4 looks prettier and might have a bit better physics. But if you're in the gaming department for realistic driving physics, you're in the wrong genre. You don't play Crysis for a tactical realism shooter, do you?
yeah i beat gta just to say i beat it... honestly i was bored 15 minutes in. San Andreas was way better. never played saints row.. looks bootleg
