Samsung Develops 10 GB per Second Graphics Card RAM

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has developed the world's fastest graphics memory card, a kind of Holy Grail of the semiconductor industry. The 256 MB Graphic DDR4 (double-data-rate 4) DRAM can process data at a speed of 10 GB per second, or four movies per second.

Graphic cards are installed in desktops, notebooks, work stations, and high-end game consoles to process video and graphic data. The product can simultaneously process a large amount of data and is thus ideal for portable media players.

Since introducing the industry’s first GDDR in 2000, Samsung Electronics has become the first to secure a full lineup of GDDR memory technology with GDDR2 in 2002 and GDDR3 in 2003. The GDDR4, whose 32 pins each process 2.5 GB per seconds, can transmit data equivalent to four DVD-quality movies per second.

Until the breakthrough, a memory chip running at 10 GB per second had been considered impossible. Among the mass-produced GDDR3 DRAM, the fastest transmits data at a speed of 6.4 GB per second. To break the 10 GB barrier, Samsung says it incorporated data bus inversion and multi-preamble technologies into the semiconductor for the first time, improving processing speed for a pin from 1.6 to 2.5 GB per second.

Samsung Electronics currently leads the global graphic DRAM market, commending about 50 percent, followed by Hynix Semiconductor with 33 percent and Germany’s Infineon Technologies with 15 percent. According to Mercury Research, the market for graphic DRAM is expected to increase to US$1.5 billion this year and $1.9 billion next year. “Demand for the latest chip will surge as the need for high-speed semiconductors for game and movie functions becomes essential,†Samsung said.

Holy crap in a pita!! G71 was supposed to have a gig of GDDR4 but then again so was R580, can anyone comment on the current status of G71 as far as if it will use GDDR3 or GDDR4?? I think if it were to use GDDR4 still that would certainly expect the delay until March, to wait for these chips to be available.

They'll save that RAM for DX10, they'll get the most they can out of DDR3, while developing DX10 cards with GDDR4

Seriously though, how much more real can they get, I know we probably said this 2 years ago, but with the advent of these kind of complex graphics it has to come to a point where it just maxes out. GPU makers are going to end up vying for the best framerates at the highest resolutions within the next 5 years because CG look pretty much real now in some cases and the only thing they can do next is to some how make 4D graphics. Almost like you can put your hand in the screen but it wil have to come with added accessories, but it would be awesome
I think what you're getting into is virtual reality, which would be the greatest gaming experience anyone can buy. Once our technology gets strong enough it just might one day become true.

Im sure it will. I can't even imagine how advanced games will be in ten years. Just think....ten years ago we were playing Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn LOL!!

What about more physics? Like using the Agea PhysX engine, etc. I just wish these graphics cards would include that type of physics hardware. Maybe DX10 cards will...
I know it's virtual reality but it's called 4D, there's no way around using some sort of headset that filters the screens but from their inception they have sucked comapred to what we see on a 2D screen, but they are getting better

A physics chip would jsut take the stress off the CPU without having to calculate whatever numbers they calculate and drive the whole computer. I see a physics calculations going onto an added PCI card or added to the PCB (like its not crowded enough already)

So yes technology will continue to progress in ways we can't even imagine now. After all Bill Gates once said "64K ought to be enough for anyone."

And the 4th Dimension is Time. So really any monitor is capable of displaying 4D. You don't need virtual reality for that. You can get 4D ultrasounds now. Although 4D with virtual reality would be more real.

We see 3D images projected onto a 2D monitor. This is the same as how we live in a 4D(or theoretically more) world but we only see 3D.
Someday our monitors will be replaced with holographic projectors. We have the technology, just right now the cost is extremely prohibitive.
Sidenote: Currently, most physicists believe there are 11 dimensions.
