Is anyone else experiencing this annoying fan rattling issue? Seems to happen any time the fan speed is increased above 30-35%. Upon further inspection the fan appears to have a lot of vertical play so it must be moving up and down while spinning at higher RPMs.
you might have a faulty fan on it. you might want to call up sapphire and let them know about your problem and see if they can send you a replacement cooler or just the fan.
Someone else on OCN had the same problem with the Sapphire 5970. The defective fan rattle or clicks when in a normal ATX tower setup. There was no clicking or noise when the computer was placed on its side with motherboard parallel to the floor.
Count me in, not only does my fan rattle but when I received my card the box and all packing had been opened and there were fingerprints all over the card. Someone had been fondling my GPU!
I am going to contact Sapphire and see about an RMA cross ship.
Mine appeared to have been opened also. I didn't notice any finger prints though. Perhaps those of us with rattling problems are the victims of a saboteur.
I got mine from the egg. Maybe some nvidia fanboy broke into the warehouse and was messing with the fans. Hehe.
I opened a support ticket with Sapphire regarding this rattling issue. I will report back on what they suggest/say. My guess would be an RMA, but who knows. With such limited stock I am somewhat afraid to choose the RMA option.
I noticed that the Sapphire HD 5970 was no longer on Newegg earlier this evening. It was not even listed any longer. I wonder why that is.
LOL I bought my Sapphire 5970OC in Canada,at a store in person.
It was also open and the CD cover was also torn.
I just think people pull them out of the box to see how big and heavy they are.
My card rocks 1000 core with ease so its a keeper, just not a Virgin when I got her that dirty, dirty girl.
When I got mine, both the seals on both sides were off the box and didn't seem sticky anymore, but it did not appear to be opened. When I opened it, it was the situation with the tight lip, where you kind of end up bending it a little to lift the cover. I don't have a built rig to test it for rattling, though. I will hopefully have it soon! I'll let you guys know how it goes. Hopefully I won't have to RMA.
My stickers were also detached, but you could tell the cardboard box inside had never been opened. I think those stickers are just not strong enough to hold the seal. Those with fingerprints...well what can I say, your card was opened.
Regarding Newegg, they routinely deactivate items that are not in stock. Means nothing.

did it still have the lack of fan control? i am really just trying to see if all 5970's are having this problem or is there a pattern to it, also people could have bought one, opened it, saw it would not fit or thier psu would not cut it, or the fan problem was there and returned it. if thats the case the store should have been selling it as a openbox with a discount, sounds a little shady to me
to be honest i am getting a little nervous about what i will be getting, i mean really nervous!!!!!!!!!

According to Sapphire tech support, ALL 5970 cards shipped with this flawed BIOS. They could be lying, but what for? Sent me the new BIOS the next day, easy to flash:
1. quick format usb flash drive.
2. copy flash files to usb flash drive.
3. reboot, go to bios and set usb flash drive as first boot device.
4. save and exit, when it completes the post, you will get a command prompt.
5. type the word flash at the command prompt, press enter.

Easy huh? Don't worry about it
yea i know it doesnt sound to hard , i sure i will be fine

They really made the Bios flash easy, with pictures included and a .bat file so it does it all automatically.
Heck I had a thumb and a camera sitting in front of me,I used my camera because it was 2 inches closer to me.
No need to be nervous, the cards are great.
About the fan rattle ,most likely all the 5970 have this rattle noise due to the fact we have twin turbine engine fans hooked up to a video card,.I exceprt some noise at low RPM before take off.
Here is a direct quote from Sapphire in reply to my submitted ticket:
"Does it sound like its hitting something? Because that is hardware related, if the card is having problem with fan unit, it will most likely need to be sent back for RMA service."
I am undecided on what to do.
The fan rattle noise is quite evident at lower RPMs, but easily canceled out by the sheer volume of sound coming from the fan's desired function (wushing/air movement @ 40%+ fan speed). I have zero temp issues so the fan is clearly doing it's job. I am, however, concerned that it might become unbalanced and eventually break and that would obviously cause issues. So...
