Saving Torrents With uTorrent?

1683 Views 11 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  halifax1
OK, so I need to format my computer. Something has started using about 50% of my internet connection 24/7 and I can't seem to find it and stop it.

Normally for me this wouldn't be a problem except the fact my internet connection is a 28.8k dial-up connection. So therefore, if it was slow before. Its dead slow now.

I have a torrent that's about a gig or so that's sitting at 35% and I don't want to start it over (because of the dial-up). Is there a way to take all the files from uTorrent and back them up, then when I install uTorrent on my fresh XP, continue the torrent from where it was?

Final Thought:
I don't want useless posts talking about the fact I have dial-up internet and asking "Why don't you just get highspeed?" The answer is, I can't. It is not offered in this rural of an area.

Also, to save the discussion. The "torrent" in question is 100% legal.

Just burn out the files to a CD or move them to an external HDD or something first, and move it back over to the download folder once you've formated your computer. When you den click the download again on the site or - if you keep the .torrent file - you could just start it again with that, it should read thru the files you've allready got and start up from where you ended it.

And, not that you would have any need to do so, but don't rename the files and folder of the download or anything.

You can keep the torrent and the file and it will can just continue it later on (Assuming you have the torrent file saved and you put everything in the right directory). What client do you use?

honestly, i didnt know canada still had dialup

copy the torrent data file, the one you opened it with, and the dled folder to an external or place that it wont get deleted

when windows is reinstalled, install utorrent, and copy over files, open the data file, and tell it to save where you put the old saved folder

Dude, why don't you get high speed?? JK I couldn't help myself.

On topic - Just move the file to a different directory and save your torrent file. You will lose the stats from the torrent (seed ratio, etc.) but what you have already DL'ed will be fine.
When you are finished re-installing Windows, open uTorrent, double click the torrent file, and point it towards the new file directory, and uTorrent will detect what was already downloaded and continue as it was before.

Ok, that's the way I figured it would happen. I just thought I'd ask so I don't risk loosing what I've downloaded.

^I second that, just copy the files to an external source. After the freash windows move them back to where you would normally store downloading stuff and re-add the torrent like you would the first time. If your still using multiple harddrives then just move them to another harddrive and start keeping your OS and saved files seperately.

Technically, not all illegal torrents are illegal to everybody. Mainly people who live in Sweeden.

I hate to break it for you, but do you know how the copyright law works in Sweden? It's not illegal to link to files that are illegal, but it's illegal to download. That's why TPB is still running.

Yep, downloading copyright material is illegal. Period. Wherever you are.

This is simple.

Just back up the entire folder of the torrent to a disk, then format, then copy the folder back over. Redownload the .torrent file, then choose the location of the files you copied back over. It will check and then continue on.

Simple.

No. Downloading Copyrighted materials is illegal in certain countries, but not in Sweden which is where TPB is located. There is no copyright law over there against downloading of copyrighted material. Since I'm in America, it would be illegal, but if you're in Sweden or in another country that has laws different than US laws, then it is completely different.

US laws do not apply to Sweden.
