I travel quite frequently as I have a 3 hour drive to my mom's about every weekend or so, and I want a small, low powered pc that will fit in my backpack. So I dug through my part drawers, and found everything I need besides besides a motherboard. So here's the parts list:

-1.6ghz Pentium
-2x512MB sticks of TurboX DDR2 Ram
-A 2.5" Seagate 250GB Hard Drive
-A Slimline Heatsink that fits 775 socket
-Shuttle 250W Power Supply

So the only thing I need to get yet is the motherboard, and a case. The motherboard I'm looking at is only $30, so I don't really want to put nearly free parts into a more expensive case that probably won't have everything I need. So I'll build my own out of plywood

The goal was as small as possible, so I did some Sketchup drawings and came to this:

I'm going to start building tomorrow, and maybe find better hard drive placement as well. I should get the motherboard by the end of this week and have this thing completer by then

I'll update this post with pics of the parts I already have tomorrow.

Thanks

Looks nice. Fans are intake? Where does the hot air go?

Do I see an SSD to be mounted on a PSU?

Fans are intake, I'm going to be adding a vent in the back, possibly with 40mm fans. Front fans are 80mm. That is an SSD, but I have a regular mechanical drive. Final mounting place is still undecided.

I start building today, updates later!

Sweet! Make sure to take pics! Any idea on color or finishing yet? Or going similar to mockup with a dark/black color?

Been wanting to build a case from scratch like this for a while...

Good luck

I'm going with a dark grey. Mainly because I think plywood is hideous. I say go for it! I've got another wooden pc build log, the Durandal, in the case mods section.

Updates!

So here's the mock up I had before doing sketchup models.

And here are the pieces glued together for the night. Sorry for no pics of the wood beforehand, I was short for time today.

I decided against trying to cook the chipset with the power supply sitting on top of it. This isn't the actual motherboard I'm using, so the power supply sits on top of the motherboard a bit because this motherboard is a little bigger than a standard ITX because of the extra PCI slot, shown here:

So all that's left to do is make the front and back, paint it, make the window, and order the extra parts I need and get it put together!

Tomorrow I plan on cutting the front and back panels and gluing them on

Oh and sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, I'll get some better ones of the finished product since my dad just bought an iPad
