XtremeGamer. I tried the D1, but I had issues with its driver (the latest Windows 7 one). The box is still collecting dust.
Xonar D2X or Auzentech X-Fi Forte.

I think they fixed it. A while ago my D2X had issues too (installed fine, worked fine, then when it was rebooted it would BSOD and you had to uninstall), but now both it and the D1 in my HTPC work just fine.

And I think its a much better card than the Xtremegamer

I'm on Windows 7 x64 with my D1, using the first Beta driver that wasn't screwed up, and I have had 0 issues.

If anything, this has been the easiest to configure and use sound card I have EVER used.

So that gets my vote, awesome sound, good features, and you can get it for under $100.

My issue was that no matter what I did, none of the changes I made in the Xonar's control panel made any difference to the audio. It was always flat. I changed the graphic EQ, and no difference. I boosted ALL of the frequencies all the way up, and still it made no difference. I clicked on those buttons on the bottom-right (like Hi-Fi, Music, etc.), and those didn't make any difference.

No matter what, all I got was a flat, un-eq'd, un-adjusted sound. It was like having onboard audio all over again. So, I went back to the XtremeGamer as quickly as I could.

Ouch, that sucks. I dunno, maybe give it another try, you might have better luck. I mean, if my problem got fixed, maybe yours did too.

That is weird, it works just fine for me. Of course, I always used hi-fi mode percisely because I didn't want the sound card coloring my music. I have a good receiver with bass and treble controls and that is what I use. Were you just using computer speakers?

Holy crap. Now my EQ isn't working. What the hell did you do to it haha. It was working 15 mins ago, until I tried clicking on one of those DSP modes

OK, this is weird, mine isn't working either. I know it was working, b/c I was messing around with it a while ago. Maybe that was before a driver update that I don't remember doing? Or maybe it was a window's update that broke it, since Windows update does like to break things every once in a while.

Yep. Just these Altec Lansing VS4121s.

Oh great. I'm sorry guys. I feel like laughing and crying at the same time.

lol, ok for real though, I'm downloading the newest driver now (the one I had installed was beta and for the RC, this one isn't), and we'll see how it goes.
So, then I wonder if it wasn't working because I clicked on one of those buttons beneath the volume knob.

Possibly, because that's the only thing I did right now that I never did before. And it was working earlier today.

Edit: oh look, unique rep == folding team rank

Hmm. I'm almost inspired to re-install it and try again and see what happens. I mean, if this card is as superior to the XtremeGamer as everyone says it is, then I want that. But the thing is, would I be the only one using cheap speakers with it? Would I be the only one looking to use its Graphic EQ? Would I be the only one looking to basically have the same driver options as the XtremeGamer, but with the superior sound quality of the Xonar D1?

I mean, I love being able to switch between Game Mode and Entertainment Mode and Audio Creation Mode. I use Game Mode for gaming, I use Entertainment Mode for general use, and I use Audio Creation Mode for CD playback since Windows Media Player has a good built-in EQ.

But if I can't do any of that with the D1, then I wasted my money. lol Maybe I should sell it.

I'm using computer speakers with it too (well, with the D2X). But I can hear a HUGE difference between it and the X-Fi Platium Champion I had before it (or whatever that one was called, the one with the front panel).

I can't say anything about game mode though, I just keep it in 2ch mode all the time but if we can't click those things it's not like it matters anyway.
