Server Setup Ideas?

672 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  NickOulton
I have 2 extra PCs that I would like to turn into a Servers. One is a Dell OptiPlex GX260 (80GB) and the other is a HP Pavilion a410n (120GB). How would I go about making one a Backup Server and the other a File Server? Which PC should server which purpose? What OS should I run? What programs should I use?

You'll need new hard drives since you can't back up 250GB on 120GB.

I would do a file/back/media server running a virtual router.

Can you elaborate more on virtual router? I don't understand how that works. Yeah, I'm planning on getting a 500GB. I'm just not sure how I should run the servers.

Create a virtual machine on your server.
Run a router application on the VM.
Host gets all incoming data packets.
Host passes all packets to the Virtual Router.
Virtual Router will direct all data packets back to the Host.
Host pass the packets to destinations.

Ok, I get it. I'll read more into it. Thank you for your suggestion.
For backup and file sharing, slap some more hard drives into one of those boxes as DuckieHo pointed out. Then get a copy of Windows Home Server and go nuts!
well really depends on what else your gonna use it for and how many ppl are gonna have concurrent connection to it. if your concurrent connections will be under 10, then go with xp pro.
i suggest keeping that 120 as your os drive and using 2 500's in raid 1(mirroring)
for a simple case such as that you can use windows built in software raid. just for backups
unless you feel you have to drop a few dollars for hardware based.

now if you feel you need more flexibilty im sure alot of people here would agree amahi is great "free" alternative also.
If you are a college student, you may be eligible for free Downloads from www.dreamspark.com They have Windoze server 03 and server 08 as some of their items for DL.
