So far this is what I bought:

Switch: Quanta LB4M
https://www.cnet.com/products/quanta-lb4m-switch-48-ports-managed-rack-mountable/specs/

NAS: QNAP TS-1635
http://www.qnapworks.com/TS-1635.asp

Cables: (arrives sunday) 10Gtek for Open Switch: Edgecore/Quanta SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Cable, 10Gb/s 10GBASE-CU Twinax SFP DAC Cable Passive 1-Meter
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L384NS2

Still need to purchase
10GBit PCIe card for PC
A compatible SFP+ cable that will probably have to be 25 meters.

I also need to know what cable to use to connect the switch directly to my PC and what card to buy for my PC. I want the absolute cheapest card I can find that does 10 GB even it only performs at half that. 500MB/s is plenty and I'm not even sure I can get that kind of performance out of the NAS anyways. It only has 4 SSDs for the cache and I'm only caching small stuff. I wont be caching any large files.

I also don't have a lot of experience with setting up these switches. Last time I had to have a friend remote into my laptop and setup my Cisco Router and Cisco Switch because they certainly where not set up for DHCP. I think this Quanta is set up for DHCP as of right now but that brings up the question following question.

How do I connect 2 Gigabit Ethernet cables to 1 computer and make it work properly? I have gigabit internet, do video editing, and am trying to centralize a lot of files on the QNAP while still having a internal hard drive like experience. So I want my Mac Pro and my 2 PCs that wont have a 10Gb card to have 2 gigabit connections each.

How connect Infiniband switch to ethernet(SFP+) ?

Hi All,

I have 2 layers of clusters.
Layer 1 has front-end clusters (multiple) which use gigabit.
Layer 2 use a distributed file-system so support all Layer 1 clusters.

The Layer 2 nodes need to be very fast connected to each other. For that i will use 2 x Infiniband (10GB/s) for each node to 2 Infiniband switches (HA).

My Layer 1 server are connected using cat6 gigabit (up to 4x) to a L2 switch (per cluster) which has 4 x SFP+ options for 10GB.
e.g. this one

Layer 1 needs to be connected to my internet facing firewall -> no problem.

Problem: How do i connect my Layer 2 (infiniband) to all Layer 1 switches (SFP+)?

Thanks a lot,
Adrian

@givmedew . I am using basically the same switch. I have yet to run across a module that isnt compatible. You should be good with pretty much any sfp+ setup. I am currint using direct attached copper for short runs. I dont remember the brand. As well as some finstar fibre and mikrotik fibre modules. all running with no issues.
