[Shacknews] Original Diablo Dev Roper: Diablo 3 Art Style Doesn't 'Ring with Diablo'

Former Blizzard North VP and original Diablo producer Bill Roper has chimed in on the Diablo 3 art style debate in an interview with VideoGamer, stating that he prefers a "grittier" look to the series rather than Blizzard's current, arguably lighter approach.

"You know, I liked the darker, grittier [style]," said Roper, who chalked up the style of the sequel to the contrary philosophies of Blizzard's Irvine studio and the former home of Diablo, the now-defunct Blizzard North.

"It makes complete sense to me where they went because they basically took the Diablo universe and then approached it from the Blizzard Irvine stance for the visuals," he said.

"That's the way they approach things. It wasn't that I looked at it and went, 'Oh my god that looks terrible.' I was like, that looks like Blizzard. The guys in Irvine. That's what it looks like to me. Their interpretation of it."

Many fans have taken exception to the game's shift in art style, running petitions in protest of light beams and rainbows. The debate continued for months, with Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson going so far as to pointedly respond to the complaints while refusing to make changes.

Though Roper understands the artistic choices behind Diablo III's look, he doesn't prefer it as a fan of the series.

"I think that one of the things that we always tried to get across was that Diablo was Gothic fantasy and I think there was just a need that was put in there from the visuals that I didn't necessarily get," he added.

"I got it from the architecture and to a degree from the character design, but not the feeling of the world. I can't say that I dislike it. I didn't look at it and go, 'Oh my god that's horrible.' But I looked at it and went, it's not really... to me as a player it just didn't really ring with Diablo."

If it looks like that, nobody's going to refrain from buying it just because it's not as dark as possible.

well to me, it just looks like they took the warcraft 3 graphics engine and swapped out some models and textures.
It's amazing how much the game looks like WoW. I'm sure I'll like it anyway, but I do agree that the grittier art seemed better.
What did everyone expect. I mean the original designers are no longer on the team so you have totally different people making it. Its going to be different. Its going to be different.

Also diablo II was something that really expanded the games I think. It really pushed things farther. This new diablo seems like it is just switching some skins and such. I could be wrong but thats just what it seems like to me.

IMHO they should have just made it a entirely new game. I really hope it is good as Ive been waiting a long time for it to come out but deep down I think its not gonna have what the original couple had.
I lived in irvine for 4 years and am now 20 minutes from it in tustin, ive seen TONS of blizzard employees out on lunchbreaks and stuff over the years.
Does it matter? This is PC, I'm sure someone will make a Gritty skin/texture pack.
I've played Diablo, and Diablo 2 for ages, and still play them (Just went though D1 with a friend this week), and I think Diablo 2 lost some of the darkness of Diablo, but I think Diablo 3 is a cross between them, looks great to me. But I see why the Blizzard North VP would like it to look more like Diablo, because its what he (and his team) made.
If they took Diablo two and upped the resolution, made more items, 4 more classes and 4 more acts they'd make so much.

They did up the resolution, but I see your running it at 640x480, you can run it at 800x600 you know?

Plus, they are making another patch for Diablo 2 soon.

we need some superhigh res screens for proof of graphical quality

No it was taken from Google images, and yeah I know about 800x600 but I want something more like 1680x1050

And where did you hear they're making another patch?

Exactly, look at Resident Evil 5 or Ninja Gaiden 2.

I'm surprised they deviated as much as they did with D3. Seeing how successful the previous games were I thought it would be a carbon copy with a graphics overhaul with the same art style.

On the blizzard forums, they have a thread that is asking people what they want in 1.13, seems it might be the last content patch blizzard is putting out.

Thats odd because it works great in vista64 on my system. Maybe I just never noticed it.
