Blaze have announced a third-party Sega Genesis (aka Sega Mega Drive) that not only allows classic games cartridges to be played but comes with fifteen titles preloaded. Onboard games include Sonic & Knuckles, Altered Beast and Golden Axe; as for the cartridge slot, it’ll accept any region’s Genesis or Mega Drive games.

The console follows Blaze’s first attempt at a Genesis clone, which was a handheld unit rather than a more traditional replica. It also lacked a cartridge slot, relying instead on 20 built-in games.

The Blaze Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is available in the UK now, priced at £38 ($53). No word on whether it’ll be making an official leap over to the US.

That's a neat idea for folks that have a lot of carts still hanging around. I've moved on to emulators for the games that I really miss... and dl'd some on the wii.
Stupid. Might as well just use emulators than give money to a company that has no right to be selling the hardware/software.

UK-based company Blaze Europe has licensed the rights to 20 retro games from the 16-bit Sega system, and these are accessible via convenient menu screen on the device. Highlights include Sonic & Knuckles, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, and Golden Axe.

They obtained rights for roms included on the portable version. Given that, it's reasonable to assume Sega has given them rights/permission to produce the hardware for this larger version.

not trying to start anything, but how is this really any different than those cheap controller-format games you can buy that plug directly into your tv and play a lot of the older (centipede/galaga/galaxian/etc) games? Say you have a stack of games around that you bought from sega years ago at $50 a pop.. but your genesis is on the fritz?

I can't find any information on the company selling this, but I can't imagine that the people that own the rights to Sonic and some of the other sega namesakes would allow this without consent.

Reminds me of the NEX, the true clone to the NES, with all it's sexiness.
(linky)

I like the fact that someone is trying to pump life back into the original Sega systems.
I still have my sega genesis from way back. I even had it modded to be able to play japanese games. I would probably never use it again and if I really wanted to, I'd rather download som roms and play them.
omg i miss the genesis SO MUCH i hope we can ship to the US
I have 2xgenesis already. 1 original and 1 CDX. I traded 2 ps1 games for the regular genesis, ive had the CDX since the beginning. SEGA FTW!!!!!!!!!

I also have a CDX. My mom sold my Genesis one day, and I was sad. Then I came across a CDX somewhere, I think maybe a garage sale or something like that. So I bought it. Luckily, my mom didn't find my cartridges and sell them, so I still had my games

Gotta love the Sega Meagdrive... Classic

I wouldn't buy something like this because you can play the roms just as good on your PC
i was a genesis kid, i'd love to replay it but i couldn't merit buying them for the 3rd time (original)(sega mega collection).
