Don't really know exactly where to put this, so I've stuck it here.

I'd like to be able to bring my computer home with me over my Christmas break. The only problem is that I have to get it from Florida to Oregon (and back after the break). Any suggestions?

Pack you hard drives in your suitcase/carry on if you have important data.

I would honestly ship it with insurance. I have no doubt that it would get opened and examined at the airport which means it's more likely to get damaged. At least with shipping it's insured and no one will be opening it.

Assuming your flying, the airliner will check your "baggage" for a fee of course, but, it'll be with you the whole time so that's a plus, at least to me.
Call the airline with the total weight of you computer and ask for a price.
Then call a shipping company FedEx/UPS/DHL, and ask for some rates as well.
To get it there, either next day or 2nd day air, it might run you a lot more money this way and your at the mercy of the shipping companies.
I'm not to concerned with shipping times; Regular shipping would be fine. I'm not sure about checking it onto the plane. I think that it might be handled better (and be safer) being shipped separately.
meh. the perils of a desktop, eh?

ship it to your destination, and then back.

either that or put it (the tower) in it's original case (the one they sent the case to you in), with the foam pads, and put extra padding, like clothes, etc, in any gaps, and check it in. make sure that the hard drives are on your person though and that nothing is in that can be damaged by being thrown (a loose PSU, the cooler, etc)
I would just remove the hard drives, graphics card, and CPU cooler and pack them seperately and securely. Then put in the case in a suitcase or something and put in it checked luggage.

Then when you get where you have to go, put it back together and boom. Desktop PC.
If I was taking it on a plane or shipping, I would take the video card out and HDD. The rest should be fine I think, I just would not want my video cards flopping around possibly by the weight of the air cooler (if I had one
)
