Short AM3 Heatsink for HTPC?

1477 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  sbeast
I'm building a HTPC, and by my calculations, I have room for a 140mm heatsink. I need a decent AM3 heatsink that'd fit, budget is about $30 before tax/shipping.

how about a scythe Shuriken (100mm) or a big Shuriken (120mm)?

I have big one, and the fan on it is adequate. I did swap the scythe fan for a yate loon low speed and get better temps though with the fan on very very low (~5v). The big Shuriken is OOS right now, but worth the wait.

What are you trying to cool?

This Zalman is a cheap solution

By the way, what's wrong with using the stock cooler?

Stock cooler = loud, hot
Most times you can barely OC on it

More emphasis on the loud because he/she will probably want his/her HTPC to be quiet.

I've heard good things about the Scythe Ninja Mini. 115mm, 80 or 92mm fan (or you can go fanless). I'm considering putting one in my HTPC if I ever get tired of the stock cooler.

Just for future reference, I settled on a Kingwin XT-964.
The suriken is a great heat sink! Go for it
i had a CM Vortex 752, which was great albeit a bit loud, if you changed the fan on it, it worked well (n' it tends to go on sale for like $5 now n' then)
