Hey!

So I'v had this setup for a while now.. I bought an extra 4GB today though

I feel its time for some OC'ing.. =D
Just a few questions ->

Should I OC with my setup..? (with stock cpu fan)
What speed could I get..?
And does anyone have recommendations/experiences..?

I have read ALOT about oc'ing.. as I keep concidering it..
Now I come here to ask =]
Your answeres will change the destiny of my rig =D

You should get better cooling...

If on a budget the "Arctic Freezer 7 Pro" is a good cooler for C2D

Or if you dont mind spending a few extra bucks XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm

You should be able to get to 3.4-3.6 easy with these coolers
Hmm.. And what about with stock cooling.. I really have no intension to spend MORE money on my pc.. yet.
depends on how well ventilated your case is and your ambient temps..

Follow some of the overclocking guides around here but I wouldnt expect more than 2.8-3.0..
well adding 4GB of RAM wont be a huge difference performance. whereas using the stock cooler and overclocking, you wont be able to overclock to that chips potential. i would have bought a new cooler before adding new RAM.

edit: yes you can OC with that set up since you have a great mobo, but you cant oc too much. the stock intel cooler is not good at all. you might be able to hit 2.8-3ghz safely. hopefully you wont need to increase the cpu voltage too much. just make sure you keeps temps in check

Uh, You come to Overclock.net and ask if you should overclock!!!?
&

J/K you want to know if it's safe to OC on the stock HSF.....

Of course you should overclock!
You have a superb MoBo for overclocking, your cpu will crank up there to a moderate overclock with the stock heatsink- just make sure you monitor your temps; and they should be your limiting factor for your OC!
-or just spend a little money on a new aftermarket HSF!

and I see you have 6GB RAM in 2x2 and 2x1 config!
Did you get it sorted properly for "Dual Channel"??

The slot assignments for mixed size modules is kind of counter-intuitive, it isn't "same size goes in both the black slots"; "same size in both the blue!":
you have to match the "total memory size" per channel!
So 1x2GB + 1x1GB for Channel A = 1x2GB + 1x1GB in Channel B
Cheers mate

And Welcome to OCN!

overclocking-maximus-formula

This may help as well....

And spacegoast is right... the cpu cooling and overclock would have gave you alot more bang for your buck... 4GB is plenty, 6 is a waste, nothing need that much RAM...

Thanks for all the info/encouragment

-> No i havnt done the dual thing.. I had no idea about that.. Ill do that now =]

-> I guess Ill overlock with stock fan first, while I look for a nice cooler

-> Ok so i'v oc'd a litle bit (yay!) I simply went into my bios and there was a cpu level up option.. 4 options.. E6700, Qsomething, E-extreme, and crazy..
I figured, as i have e6600 i selected e6700
!

-> Here is a screenprint of cpu-z and Ai Suit... I have NO idea if this is good or not.. I didnt have to tweak any voltage or anything, it did it itself..

I hope i did it correctly?

Ok i'v sorted out the ram now
Plugged it in in the correct places now

Is there anything else I have to do? Settings or something, or..?

Ok so i'v had a few shots overclocking using the Ai suit that came with my mobo.

Im not going to overclick further untill I have a new fan.
I found something intresting.. and im not sure weather this is good/bad/normal..

Here is a screenshot of CPUz and Ai Suit.. when idle..

And here a screenshot just after a few seconds of 'stress'..

I hope its normal that the multiplyer skips from 6 to 9 frequently, acording to load/stress??
Also is this all good, voltage and frequency wise..?

And finally, i think i WILL buy a new fan today.. Any more recomendations? I think ill set a limit of maybe 20 (or £30)..

Thanks so much in advanced

Hi blizma,

Since you want more suggestions and you have a new MOBO, off the top of my head, this is the procedure I followed after the installation of my new 780i MOBO:

01. Inserted one 2 Gig stick of RAM
02. Deleted drive sector and performed a clean install of Win Vista Ult 64bit
03. Upgraded Win Vista to SP1 +
04. Disabled lame Win Vista Security Alerts
05. Flashed to latest Bios
06. Installed latest Chipset Drivers
07. Installed latest GPU Drivers
08. Installed latest SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Drivers
09. Downloaded the latest overclocking software aids; Prime95, CPUZ, CPUID, GPUZ & RivaTuner
a) Prime95 has three main tests;
- Small FFTs; to test CPU stability
- In-Place Large FFTs; to test CPU and some MEM usage
- Blend; to test CPU and lots of MEM usage
b) CPUZ - Provides info on CPU overclock and CPU VCore voltage
c) CPUID - Provides voltage readings on many things including all
the Cores in your CPU at Idle and Load temps
d) GPUZ - Provides info on GPU(s) overclocking
e) RivaTuner - Overclocks GPUs and provided direct FAN Controls
10. Inserted the second 2 Gig stick of RAM
11. Disabled/Enabled features in Bios (that will either help or hinder an overclock)
12. Left MEM at 1066 MHz but loosened timings to 5-5-5-18-2T @ factory recommended 2.2v (to take MEM stability out of equation when first overclocking the CPU)
13. Overclocked the CPU from 2.4 GHz to 3.2 GHz while tweaking the voltages and testing for stability using Prime95, CPUZ and CPUID
14. VDroop MOBO chip 2HB pencil mod performed to cancel CPU VCore dips when CPU was Idle and increase volts by 0.02 on Load
15. MEM was restored to stock timings of 5-5-5-15-2T and ran Prime 95 Blend test for six hours stable
16. Overclocked my GPUs using RivaTuner (can use software from NVIDIA or ATI for GPU overclocking if you chose) and GPUZ
17. Set-up direct FAN control in RivaTuner with three separate profiles (60% - 80% - 100% speeds when temperatures reach 45-55C - 56-65C - 66-200C respectively)
18. Tweaked Win Vista to run better for a Gamer
19. Defragged Drive
20. Installed games and still playing!

Look at my rig info and you'll see that an aftermarket CPU cooling fan is essential in your overclocking endevours.

The outlined steps are to give you ideas and aid you along. Note that you can Google or search this forum for specificts on each step outlined in this post for clarity.

You should really overclock in the bios... Maybe check out the thread over at extreme systems The Maximus Formula Thread
the bios on it are a bit complex for the novice user.. But with some time and effort it should have all the info you need

And use OCCT v 2.0.1 to stress test it and watch load temps.... The intel spec on that chip is 71c, so I wouldnt want it to run much past 65c for very long under stress....
Look in your manual for bios settings, you will need to disable a few probably to keep the multi from going up and down(I don't know about your mobo). It does this to try and save energy by turning things down when the power isn't needed.

On my mobo it's C1E,EIST they will be different on your mobo I'm sure.Your voltage is fine as well as the temps for now.I recommend this cooler Xigmatek S1283 cooler or a Arctic cooling freezer 7 for your c2d.
