My brother desperately wants a computer, and a friend of his offered to give him his, because he doesn't use it anymore and wants $170 for it, with monitor included. IMHO the computer is a piece of trash, but he seems persisted to get it. He also says that if he doesnt like the performance, he can just upgrade. Anyway here are the specs:

AMD 64 3000 Single Core Processor 1.8Ghz
ASUS motherboard Socket 939
ATI X800 Pro Video Card
19" Samsung Monitor
2 GB ddr2 ram
Custom Case with window panel

I dont know any of the other specs. But would it be cheaper to buy this piece of garbage and upgrade, or just build his own system?

Thanks.

Well, I doubt you can buy a new system with a monitor for that low, but you could do it for a bit more cash and get a WAY better computer. That certainly won't be playing any modern games....

i would not pay that much for the computer of the specs but its not that bad of a computer.
its not really a piece of trash but is not good compared to todays standards.
if he wants it i would tell him to try to lower the price some and unless the case itself is pretty good since some cases can go up to a few hundred.honestly the most i would pay for this build would be maybe 80 personally but he would be better to build his own for that price

if he bought that pc, what would he upgrade to? that pc is using agp.

He knows nothing of computers, but i would get him a cheap socket AM3 mobo, either a phenom or anthlon, at least a radeon 5570, a 500 w psu, and ill give him my old ddr3 ram as well as my speakers.

Asking a computer enthusiast form, most of us will reply. No the buy is not worth it.

the tower itself is worth 75 tops. Monitor i doubt will be worth more than 50ish

Tell him that hardware is hardly upgradeable, even if he upgrades it he will only be upgrading to outdated stuff due to hardware limitations.

His money will be spent wisely if he buys something current.

For around 500 im sure he can get a manufactured pre built computer that is quad core and be able to do everyday things.

The cpu your brother friends has is non even enough to watch youtube videos in 720p.
Let alone be able to run most sites with flash or sites that are java intensive.

Like the others have said:

Try to drop the price
if and only if
the case and monitor are worth anything
else
get out.

In reality all it is worth at this point is a place to do homework, light office, and print server.

Well he has a total budget of $220 right now... Im pretty sure no matter how many different wish list combination's I make on newegg, I wont be able to get the price that low.

Well Its a Samsung 19" monitor, and for the case, all i know is that it has a windowed side panel, also it comes with a sound card too.

$220 is a hard budget to hit. My black friday sig rig was just under $500 and I already had the HDs. And that was with $68 for the cpu... I would recommend saving the pennies for a bit longer.

Black Friday isnt for a while.. He seems really persistent to buy this comp even after my attempts to change his mind. If he does go through with the purchase, he will have a little left over for a new mobo then he can save up for a new processor and psu. When I get my ATI 7xxx/Nvidia Kepler cards in August ( if they come out by then) I can just give him my x2.
