should i sell my rig?

1196 Views 24 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mocha989
was considering selling it on craigslist or ebay for $1000
i figure i could put all my parts in my old xoxide acrylic case and see what i could get out of it. i always come really close to upgrading but when i have money in hand i back out. but if my computer was actually gone i could do a new build. heres the parts i picked out so far

msi 790fx gd70 board $164
phenom 965 125w $195
G skill 4gig ddr3 1600 $96
sapphire 4850x2 2gb $240
corsair 750w psu $108
windows 7 home premium 64 bit $105
western digital 640gb hdd $50
and my 1200 i already have

total $958

the only thing im not 100% sure on right now is using windows 7
i'd hate for my some of my games not to be compatible.
also i dont know why the 4850x2 is such a under rated card. its almost as good
as a 4870x2 and alot cheaper. does the gddr 3 memory affect this card at higher res?
cause i usually play at 1920 x 1080. is there any better way to spend $958?

Edit: my games
prey
battlefeild 2
fallout 3
mirrors edge
crysis maximum edition
left 4 dead
spore
wow - guilty pleasure
prototype
dead space

i would get the gigabyte 790FXT UD5P instead. that said, good parts, and go ahead and sell.

don't forget to look up combo deals. there's one for the crosshair III formula and the 750TX for $10 off for example, and windows 7 can be had in a lot of combo deals.

or you could go i5... and why the 4850X2?

i5 is FTW. and 4850X2 blows it can be beaten by a single HD5850

i checked out that board and im genuinely curious on why that would be a better choice. the msi board has 4 x16 slot even though theres a good chance i might not even use two lol. it also fixed the problem that they had on the msi k9a2 platinum board. the heat pipes lower and the sata ports are sideways. + it has a clear cmos button which is alot better than moving a jumper when oc'ing.

how do the i5's oc? i've never really looked into the i5's that much.
also the 5000 series is taking forever to get out. who knows when they will be available to everyone.
and if i did go with the i5 what would be a good board still in my budget. most of the popular i7 boards are pretty expensive. x58, bloodrage, etc

yea thats true. if you dont want a HD5xxx series card like a GTX285 or 275 the HD4850x2 are ******ly loud and dont perform the way i though they would. The core i5 can do 4.0 + on air with lower then 1.40v

i've had bad issues with MSI products. my board's ram slots are iffy: 2 are dead (came DOA, the support said i should flash the bios to fix them) and the other 2 don't work unless the ram is in a specific 'sweet spot'.

MSI have poor, very poor, quality assurance. i had more issues with my MSI laptop.

you could also try the crosshait III formula as i think i mentioned.

im not exactly 100% happy with my board either. its not bad or anything but out of 4 pci slots i can only use 1.

looking at gtx 285 benchmarks and im not overly impressed
starting to think that waiting for one of the 5000 series might be worth it.
also i really like the asus crosshair. if i go with the 965 instead of a i5 im getting it instead

ohh it is my friend jsut got the HD5850 and he got the last XFX on newegg last week and hes so excited to get his build done on friday

Core i5 is ran off of the P55 chipset. So i would look at like a gigabyte P55 UD4P or a Asus Sabertooth 55i

if i go with i5 do you know a good board to go with?
that is somewhat cheap. most of the good i7 boards are up there.
im still leaning more towards the 965 tho. im going to look more into them
i do know that the 965's hit 4ghz without that much trouble. im trying to find some benchmarks for the 285 superclocked edition.

If you can sell your rig then do it. I would go with AMD for now too. Keep the 4870 for now and throw a cheap card in yours and craiglist it. Then upgrade away.

Win 7 is just fine.

according to a review on Newegg, the Crosshair III does not work with 965 C3 chips yet. keep that in mind. apparently it needs a BIOS flash or something.

if going i5, the P55M UD2 is a great cheap board if you don't need the size of an ATX board. otherwise, i'd say the P55 UD3R

get the gigabyte p55 UD4P motherboard. i dont like AMD processers because i like to overclock and have the lowest possible voltage which is why i like intel because you can get 4.0GHZ rock stable below 1.3v and 4.2 to 4.4 stable below 1.4v

UD4P is much better then both and only like 30 more bucks. great deal. and you can get a combo deal with the core i5 750 if you get the UD4P

Combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.290314

Then get some nice g. skill ripjaw memory, and like some sort of good after market CPU cooler and youd be set and running at 4.0 to 4.2ghz
